There are some really great ideas on here. Despite the synth based sound, she hasn’t abandoned the beauty that her country and folk songs have. Liking it as much as her other albums now but I am pretty sure Golden Hour will still reign supreme.

The beauty of this record is like the beauty of a business park retention pond

Good comparison

Watched the film as a first listen, found it to be a mediocre project. Mostly flimsy downtempo songs with sterile lyricism. Poor mixing/mastering overall. Seems like a case where an artist grabs me with a classic album then I have to endure disappointment with the rest of their discog.

I think she’ll bounce back. Honestly just feel she went too hard for the breakup concept without actually putting too much emotion into it. It doesn’t evoke like it should. Still mostly good though.

I imagine it's uncomfortable to breakthrough into the mainstream, have a large audience awaiting your next move, then essentially be forced into this album concept due to life circumstances. She'll likely feel more liberated with the next one.

I agree. I also feel she’s a better character writer than an autobiographer. It worked on Golden Hour because the emotions and ideas she was expressing were still pretty universal. Here again it’s just a bit hard to relate to.

Basically agreed with all the points made lately, I think this is a bit hamfisted although not as cheesy as it could have been, and I do think she'll bounce back just fine. This was an album that had to happen after her divorce, I'm just glad it wasn't a total cringe fest.

How is heartbreak hard to relate to lmao

Yeah, this feels like there’s some assumption of the universality of the experience/defensiveness about the message she’s sending that it winds up with just a bunch of vagueness and none of the charm, sly playfulness; the personality of her past stuff
Compare:
“Between the lunch and dinner rush
Kelly caught that outbound bus for Vegas
And we're all out here talking trash, making bets
Lips wrapped 'round our cigarettes
She always thought she was too good to be a waitress.”
“Waking him up nice and slow, bring him coffee in bed
Listen to his problems, tell him that I understand
Touch him so he knows in his heart, he's the only one
Try to loosen up and be more fun
Yeah, I could be more fun”
Like that second one feels so clichéd, and like she’s got this marketing image she’s trying to push out to the world, rather than exploring a story with genuine character, even if it’s the earlier lyric that’s ostensibly fictional

That was kinda the point tho. It's a song about expectations. The ones women (particularly) are put under and place on themselves, too.
