Good Vibrations is Brian’s final masterpiece before he fell off his rocker imo

poured so much soul into that composition that he became soulless

smile sessions were scrapped for good reason, although smiley smile was not the proper way to handle the material. A compilation years later like this is fine.

it worked out in the sense that it gave sunflower and surfs up their two best album closers

what’s really sad is if you see a recent picture of Brian Wilson, or really any picture post GV, and he still doesn’t look all there. Dude really sacrificed his mental health and awareness for the sake of his craft

it’s an essential part of The Beach Boys mythos but it’s still sad

Is the accepted narrative so clear about art’s role in his downfall?

well I assume it was mostly drugs but lots of artists in this time period took drugs to amplify their music so I think it is definitely tied together

I think both pet sounds and smile are Heart-On-Your-Sleeve type records that reflect Brian’s passion and eventually (smile) his erratic and borderline mentality

I don’t wanna say his music was the only factor, but music isn’t made in a vaccuum ya know? It’s the product of one’s current mental state, no matter the mood or genre.

I don't know if it's just because I grew up hearing GV only in the context of their "greatest hits", but the song always sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of Smile. Great song, don't get me wrong, just feels like it doesn't quite belong.

it was always intended more as a single, I agree that it doesn’t fit on this album

I take issue if anything with “Dude really sacrificed his mental health and awareness for the sake of his craft”, certainly not “[music is] the product of one’s current mental state, no matter the mood or genre.“

it’s pretty well documented that Brian’s ambition directly led to his downfall
