It gets better with more listens in my opinion but still mostly a deviation from what drew me to the band. If I had never heard this band or their prior work I’d enjoy this one more.

i've now listened to it like 10 times and i have to stop myself lmao

the synth flourishes are so gorgeous and the subtlety is really appreciated - definitely like it more than this record. i'm so excited.

I think I’m at a dozen listens myself. I’ve never 180’d on a song so hard before. At first listen I damn near hated what I was hearing, lol. Pretty hopeful for the album being an instant classic. And yes this track is better than probably anything from Forgotten Days. The production on this song is the best they’ve had yet.

Off topic of the new track and back on topic of Forgotten Days, Stasis is the worst song this band has ever produced. I really dislike that song.

Not outstanding but the new one is singularly better than almost anything on this. The instrumentals are mmmmmm. Undecided on the vocal arrangement.

This is a very frustrating band, hope the new one is better.

Def going to check it out. Finally checked that single, instrumentation is great but vocals are kind of weird at times.

listening now and i'm conflicted - some really great parts and some head-scratching parts. hope it clicks.

edit: okay track 5 is stunning, instant goosebumps

edit edit: yeah i'm really conflicted. it feels like the band are trying to push themselves out of their comfort zone but at the cost at sacrificing what they excelled at. there's a lot of songwriting decisions that make zero sense to me and smell of "let's do something different!" rather than what tonally makes sense. all these efforts to add complexity when the best song there is the simplest one.

also i expect to be the only person legitimately riled up about this but 'daybreak' would have been the perfect closer to the record, why on earth didn't they just swap the last two tracks around? lyrically, tonally and musically it makes so much more sense. you'll see what i mean when you listen to it.

I was really happy with the closer, my favorite from all their records, but I agree lyrically daybreak would've been a better fit...I thought the same thing with ashes on foundations. But this direction they took is right up my alley as far as melody and tone is concerned. Not trying to be high on it either, but everything new was well done and fitting. pleasantly surprised how much I enjoy it...it's got a lot of elements from the first three records, maybe more so in common with heartless without sounding so maudlin, but it's still its own thing.
