Gave this a second listen and I don’t really know how to feel. I could either love or hate this. It’s much more linear and occasionally obtuse than I though it would be. The vocals kind of annoy me and I can’t really make out the words most of the time, which is frustrating because I can tell that these songs (are trying to) have a major emotional core that would help me get a grip on them. Weird album.

i actually agree with Boney's issue with the vocal production on this. part of the reason I prefer LOSE and Pretty Years to this is largely because I feel the production on this obscures his vocals more than the CEG records (and the hooks are better on both those CEG albums). still like this a lot obviously

gonna disagree with this, Marian and Ultrasound are his best hooks... I guess Cymbals had some traditionally catchier stuff, like the aforementioned 4th of July but they never hit as hard as those do

Sitting down with the lyric sheet, as you suggested in the review, really helped, and I’m glad I did it because the lyrics are pretty amazing, certainly the best I’ve heard this year so far. Hopefully now that I’ve fit the words to the melodies they’ll be easier to decipher on further listens.
And yeah, “Marian”’s hook is massive.
