dope, though i agree the flow is a bit too slow for my taste. not too much engaging throughout the midlle of the album, but the nice atmosphere saves everything

I've got to know this guy through a Bon Appetit video, he seemed to be a very nice and charismatic lad.

The post punk/country fusion was really well developed here. Curious to see what he brings for us next.

Loving this, but I'm not sure how country it feels to me?

This is definitely (alt-)country, but it does feel packaged and performed in a way that’s not super traditionally country. Orville Peck is a character and the music reads like it. It’s enjoyable though so that’s not really a criticism of the project so much as a realistic observation.

Yeah, it's definitely one of those albums that's right on the border of country vs. country inspired. Of the new brand of alt-country that is kind of questioning what the genre can be, he probably pushes the furthest, making as much a shoegaze/post-punk album as a country one. That's part of why I love it so much, but it's just as much cowboy-appropriation as anything else. He takes that earnestness of the genre and makes it this overblown performative character that still feels earnest and real (at least in my own opinion, I know that a lot of folks are split on that claim).

Mostly agreed, though I actually think his non-country influences are often exaggerated (I don’t hear any shoegaze here) and I’ll add (and I’ve said this here before) that country/post-punk fusion has been around forever.

^All for sure valid, shoegaze probably isn't the strongest influence, more like an exaggerated classic Western Ennio Morricone style, I just didn't have a great word for that haha. He just has slightly more bells and whistles, which is why I think there's at least some level of shoegaze influence here, although you're right to say that it definitely shouldn't be defined by that genre. And I think the country/post-punk fusion has been around, but it's heyday was early late 90s/early 2000s at the latest, so I think this is one of the more accessible and modern takes on that style. Definitely not an expert though, so I could easily be proven wrong

Yeah definitely hear everything from Elvis (Roses Are Falling) to Bowie - or maybe some other 80s artist like Tears for Fears (Dead of Night) - to very obviously country (Take You Back). It's got my attention for sure.

Cowboy country is a legit genre, I would recommend Don Edwards if you haven't heard him yet.

Orville on the other hand is just modern country. Might even say alt country I guess.

Eh he has the traditional vocals though. It's alt in musicianship in certain aspects but it's hard entrenched in tradional country vocals.
