Some of this is a bit snoozy but the highlights are absolutely nothing to be scoffed at.

It's hard to say forever, love

Forever's just so far

Why don't you say you're with me now

With all of your heart?

stumbled into this and was kinda blown away by the weird '80s aesthetic of the production, looking forward to another listen to get a better feel for the songs themselves

I thought I’d be a one-album-Angel-Olsen-kinda guy (My Woman’s good an’ all but not enough for me to hunt down everything else she’s done) but I’m glad I gave this a go, I think it’s so much better than her last. Lark is a beast. And Summer isn't getting enough love. Is it Dreamboat Annie era-Heart that it reminds me of?

You know that it’s just this album but on solo guitar right

Spoiler: It’s not better.

9 out of 11 on Whole New Mess are cuts from this
"Endgame" and "Spring" don't carry over
"Whole New Mess" and "Waving, Smiling" are new
but even then I'm just going off titles and maybe the ones I mentioned are the same songs and I just didn't realise :O

Yeah those two are new but for all intents and purposes it’s basically the same material. I was responding to Gyro.

I dig the album prior to this one quite a bit so it's about time I give this one a go

finally got around to hearing Whole New Mess, 3.1 avg is kinda stupid. probably would be higher if it were advertised as a "demo version" of this album instead of a new record. the tunes work very well as sparse and stripped down as they are on that album. love Angel's warbly vocals

Gotta disagree with that, 3.1 is about right as an average for it imo. The arrangements here are A1 and without them the songwriting feels a lot flimsier to me, even if the stripped down versions were the “originals.” Whole New Mess has its moments and it’s solid background listening but there’s nothing grabbing about it - and it’s not like Angel hasn’t made great stripped down music before (see Strange Cacti, her best or second best release for me).
