france is like emblematic of high middle ages europe the same way denmark/norway are emblematic of the viking age. if you drive thru the countryside you see awesome ruined medieval castles and towers like every 5 kilometers lol. towers will those super tall conical spires are from france, gothic architecture is from france, knights are from france, the feudal system synonymous with medieval europe social organization is from france, the aristocrats all over europe spoke french, famous medieval figures who you dont think of as french were french, like richard the lionheart and henry II "of england", modern western music is from medieval france etc etc

All very good points. The only places I've been in France are Paris and Normandy but would love to check out more of the country at some point. Growing up in post 9/11 America the stereotype of the French being pussies who hate freedom was pretty prominent, that is until you realize that when the French don't like their leaders they historically bust out the guillotine instead of just posting about it. I think the last time I was in Paris there were massive union protests rolling through the city which was cool seeing.

yeah you don't win the battle of verdun by being pussies, two artillery shells exploding every second for 8 months on that field. if you do go back, the cathar castles around l'ariège are awesome, carcassonne, montségur, roquefixade, quéribus, and some of the castles in brittany are gorgeous, fougères & josselin, like disney movie architecture
