From what I know ION is considered to be up there, it's less murky than some of their previous efforts. Someone else will know more, Outre maybe? (not heard it myself).

The only tune I feel I have to return to straight away is 'Phreqs', the rest just seems like wall to wall intensity for the most part. Sort of 3-3.5 bracket on a first listen...but this isn't first listen music. Might try another of theirs and then return to this one.

Phreqs is the standout & it's a 3/5 album, your ears are working fine.

With Thou I'm on safer ground, sludge/doom I'm a bit more instantly at home, vocals seem to be the most intense element of their sound

yap they do a nice filthy contrast with beauty in some sweet guitar lines. Also they have unique identity, sludge and doom sure but noise, grunge and indie. Without want to fill you with recs...this summer was cool to enter Thou, cause they dropped 3 EP's before the LP, where you can see/ learn all those influences.

I was going to say one riff instantly reminded me of Soundgarden's 'Fourth of July' so can see a few '90s influences (Down and Crowbar for sure). I'm enjoying it so far, not my absolute favourite vocal style but they're always at least 'good' and fit in ok

there's some soft female vocals here and there to balance...the vocals are filthy nihilistic af...is a matter of habit (or indeed personal taste) I'd say.

The section just before the end of The Changeling Prince was some delightful chug-a-lug, these boys have some - gonna say it - riffs

Changeling Prince is one of my fave tracks from them..."behind a mask another mask"

Last tune was bloody epic too...first impressions it'd land somewhere between this Voivod album and the Sleep in terms of score. So a 3.5-4, 72-75% sorta range. It could obviously surprise me on later spins and do even better but probably my 2nd favourite metal release of the year.

Awesome, this perk is probably related to Voivod’s current label, Century Media Records.
