Still constantly jamming this and the guitar parts are so goddamn dull. This LP doesn't reward heavy rotation imo

That guitar riff in Downfall is one of the most hilariously annoying things they've put to record IMO. On one hand, it makes me laugh, on the other, it really annoys the fuck outta me. It's like a generic black mettal riff with a capo put on the 5th or 6th fret and/or a black metal album being played at 78 RPMs instead of 33 1/3 or 45.

It can't possibly be as annoying as your avatar.

Yeah, Downfall's riff is initially okay, but grates quickly. The same goes for "Devote My Life"'s riff; it's so goddamn repetitive and irritating it ruins the rest of the track.

Step down from the 3 before it, but still really good.

on a riff comparison it's night and day though. maybe it's intentional on their part, but it just sounds really lacklustre. even the solos suck here.

"I can't possibly be as annoying as your avatar."
Steven John Wilson's an annoying stuck up, sell out Brit prog star, yes. Nevertheless, I thought his sell-out album To The Boner was slightly more OK than this DEG album.
On a related note though, I think my rating has settled at where it currently stands. Gave it another listen last night and pretty much haven't changed opinion between the previous listen and now other than the singles being better in the album's context. The album version of Utafumi aside from the screamed backing vocals in the chorus is inferior to the single version IMO in the same way that I preferred the single version of Hageshisa To over the DSS version.

Okami's European release of this is up for pre-order, releases on the 26th. thank god, because as much as I enjoyed this album, I'm not sure I enjoyed it enough to justify dropping $50 on it when compared to past Dir En Grey releases.

i havent heard the itunes versions, i've been jamming spotify, but i can't hear a great deal of difference tbh; it sounds a lot louder thats about it.
im loving the wake remake though. although theyve butchered the solo...

I assume the download I got was based on the iTunes one. They probably sound the same, but I'll keep looking for a CD rip until I get my copy, which won't happen soon.

wish they would've worked with Tue Madsen again on this one. they had Dan Lancaster, the dude who mixed BMtH's That's the Spirit, mix it and that's probably why it sounds so off.

As I expected, this album has grown on me a bit, although not enough for me to change my rating. Still, the album has a bunch of great tracks, as most people have already stated.

@Hellscythe
Brian Gardner mastering probably didn't help much either, because the remakes are mixed by Jens Bogren, but mastered by the aforementioned person and they don't sound like Bogren's usual work.
