been curious about this, never really heard of this band but Row's review is making me want to listen to it
Also, the same guy who produced this also did Suicide Silence's s/t, but also did Glassjaw

yea he has a mega mixed bag, including chocolate starfish and the hot dog flavored water and relationship of command which should say a lot (he also produced the cure's self titled which is how i found out who he is)
the production here is kind of muddy but it's definitely an upgrade for them so I'm not complaining (previous producer was john feldman)

lol ye Feldman is literally the dirtiest name in the game right now
also I don't know anything about music theory so I won't argue about notes and stuff. I just don't see what's lazy about it, it provides an unexpected and surprising left turn which keeps things fresh, I really like it

yea that's fair. i just wish there was a proper set up into it so it didnt feel so forced and out of nowhere. if anything its definitely not the worst used key change (cut up angels anyone)

It's not Feldman, it's Ross Robinson
He's also done a lot of Korn stuff too

I also love the key change in Cut Up Angels... I feel like I may just be easy to please with these things

The point about laziness is not that it doesn't work as a "left turn" as you say, but is down to the fact that it is a very quick and very easy "trick" to achieve that effect. There is no "composing" that goes into a key change like this, it's as easy as flicking a switch. If they had spend a bit more time working on that part of the song, and experimented more with its composition, they could have come up with a more pleasing, more interesting and less jarring way to progress the song. Maybe some borrowed chords or notes, maybe some altered or extended chords, maybe a different drum rhythm, time signature, tempo etc.
At the end of the day though, it doesn't matter how much work went into producing a song or part of a song, as long as it sounds good. That key change, to me, doesn't sound good. Some key changes do sound good but usually they happen to also incorporate some other features like what I mentioned above as a way to creatively transition into the higher key. Most not-terrible key changes will at least introduce some tonal tension that then resolves into the key change to return to some stability, but as far as I remember, this song doesn't really do that.
I need to re-listen to Cut Up Angels.

Oof, I just hit that key change. How unnecessary.
EDIT: As a whole though, this is pretty good so far.

at least they kind of transition into it, again unlike cut up angels

you talking about the key change at the last like 30 seconds?

Yeah sorry, I don't get this at all. It's not a bad album, but I felt like they were more suited for an MCR-like punk rock style. I understand this was a very emotional album to make, but it still feels like they're trying for a level ambition that they don't have the talent to back up. And the production fucking sucks. I'm glad, I guess, that some people see that as a breakthrough for them, but I'll take The Used of the early 2000's any day.

There's some good stuff on here, but it really feels bloated to me. And like others, I agree that the mixing/production is not the best. If there was some trimming done, I think I'd dig this a lot more.
I'd say it's more like a 3.2, but since I have to round down, I'm not feeling it at a 3.5 yet. I'll probably give another shot, but it's a lot to get through.

I haven't loved any of their records since In Love and Death. This caught me completely off guard. One of the best records of 2017.
