kind of funny that there's no mention of the studio funding controversy anywhere on the band's wiki page, just that they crowdfunded a studio and that it "was successful".

money was paid, saunas were made, your hope was slayed ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Was gonna rate this a 3 but by the end of it it got really old. May need to revisit Time I once more but I think I am enjoying this more than Time I, which is hardly at all

Went back to see if I was too harsh on this, but no this really starts off rather atrociously, the songwriting is lacking, and the production is awful. Actually puts Time II into perspective because I guess it could be flat and lifeless instead of just having all the levels severely off. There’s some better moments that come along in the later half of the album but still, this is surprisingly uninspired and I’d forgotten why I disliked it at release.

@smok
I'm actually kinda disappointed that it seems like jari never got his sauna. All that money and he never spent a few measly thousand of it on the sauna

So I listened to loud & modern version of this from Time II package and woah, it improved the experience so much. Many details buried in the original truly shine here, lots of arrangements included. Funny thing is, it's even more compressed but we got what we got. Even the abhorrent original programmed drums sound more or less tolerable here without additional tweaking.

on this one i did a full remaster and i much prefer what i came up with back when this was actually released but i'm acutely aware that it's not a direct comparison since i'll have obviously remixed/remastered it to my tastes
i did try the loud and modern version of this but i wasn't a fan
i'd really love to know why he opted for a drum machine on this one but i'm going to assume he was more confident mixing a drum machine as the mixdown of the drums on time i and ii is fucking awful

He used programmed drums because of zero budget obviously. But he really made them sound bad, so many albums with programmed drums sounding waaaay better than this.
I tried to return to my own edition of original TFS after the LM version but just couldn't listen to it, sounds like a demo now.

Zero budget because he bought a sauna with the fans' money.

"He used programmed drums because of zero budget obviously."
nah, i don't buy this. it would have costed him next to nothing to get kai to just do a once-over of his drum machine, would have taken him a day at most. setting up a few mics even at home in kai's practice space would have been an improvement and could have been done on practically no budget. i think it's more a confidence thing for jari (and i don't mean that as a slight) - mixing raw drums is a lot more challenging than a drum machine and if he insisted on mixing things himself he'd want to utilise what he's more confident with.

Sauna was after TFS, so yes it was zero budget. Given his perfectionism, recording drums in home studio was definitely not an option.

nonsense. if he sent the drum machine demo to the label and said "hey can i have a few hundred euros for studio time to smash out these drums" they'd have absolutely said yes.

Considering their previous relationship history including years of delays, numerous advances et cetera... I dobut that!
But he seriously needs to have at least a mastering engineer for future projects which never happens and so I'm sad.

i've spoken to people at nuclear blast. without revealing too much information and my sources, they'd have said yes.
