hot take -> all of avp is fantastic

not a ton of hope for anything as good as this coming from bladee in the future, but I'm thankful we got this

coming from someone who doesn't dig this genre at all, this album is mindblowing. it transcends every cliche of the genre; reminds me more of early 80s music like John Foxx than it does Yung Lean or something like that. i have no idea what inspired such a fusion of styles, but it really exudes a kind of conscious detachment from the glorification of hedonism and technology that i find interesting. truly dystopian music.

hmm, a detachment from the glorification of hedonism? how so? can u elaborate

i don't think it's much more complex than unabashed lyrical depression

the designer brands and sex that are usually glorified are taken as a given instead of celebrated, which definitely marks a divide of sorts but one that is less about hedonism than mental health/perspective

i wouldn't say pleasure so much as sensual/aesthetic awe. his descriptions are linked to aesthetic beauty rather than some affect on his emotional state

yea i was confused because to me it feels like he vaunts a hedonistic lifestyle to an extent. i mean he doesn't exactly extol the lifestyle in the typically gleeful, bombastic way, but rather more like in a drug-addled, catatonic sort of way that tends to feel more hollow than proud.

hmm, what you say makes sense, but isn't some of it predicated on the presumption that he is genuinely seeking insensateness ? some of his lyrics feel to me like he is unwittingly caught in some sort of substance-driven vicious cycle

yeah i'm with hal on this one, basically what i said earlier. it's not pride so much as resignation

from my own experience with depression i would think that the numbness isn't a goal in and of itself but rather a patterned shortcoming of something approximating joy

yea seeking numbness to me feels more like some sort of defeatist relegation into deluded safety, reclusion and complacency. but i see what sach is saying.. it's a pretty interesting topic.

you don't believe they actually struggle with depression ?

tbh i haven't done much research on bladee and friends.
