I'd probably rustle up a Darkside of the moon if I had 9 attempts.

To be fair he's been getting closer and closer recently. Aesthetically 'Wit's End' is perfect, very dark, very goth. Bit tough going as a start to finish listen though. 'Big Wheel' tries every Americana style you could think of over about 20 songs so again a bit too much of a slog. This one has the traditional feel of a classic.

The Pitchfork review for this was pretty decent but definitely reads higher than an 8.1, fuckers could have marked it down as Best New Music

They do that on occasion. Sometimes the writer clearly likes an album on a level above whatever the site decides its score should be. The number is ever arbitrary of course, in an ideal world only the words would matter.

I was looking at the other scores and I think Catacombs was their highest rated, then Wit's End
I still think this is a step up from both of those. Catacombs is nearly as consistent I guess, the highlights don't stand out as much for me though

Gonna check because of you doof, this better not suck :D

Yeah, it's settled into my top 8 here which are all 4.5+ tunes.
I'm kinda dealing with Rancid Girl, part of me wishes he'd replaced it and half of me thinks it's a pretty funny song/statement in context of the album

Yeah Rancid is definitely an outlier, a fine enough tune though. Did you see his tweet about it?

No, what did he say? The dude has a quirky sense of humour
|
| |
Album Rating: 4.5
He said, "Rancid Girl is a love song think dead milkmen punk rock girl - a woman who's unconventional beauty comically annihilates big wheel narrator"
No idea what it means but it's an interesting image for sure

I guess he means the narrator for the song Big Wheel rather than the whole album - that would make sense, musically it sounds almost identical. The Big Wheel narrator is an unreconstructed male truck driving sort, mr macho
You'll have to start listening to the Big Wheel album now :D

I guess I do (though I have a love-hate relationship with double albums)! Perhaps I should work through his stuff in reverse (glancing at your ratings it appears you think he generally improves with each album, more or less).

Reverse order would be a good choice with McCombs - it's pretty much what I did starting with Wit's End and it worked well for me
I think you might prefer another of his albums to this one - Big Wheel, Wit's End, Catacombs and A could all be possible Boney faves
Even this year's B-Sides comp is interesting (if crazily hit and miss)

The Paste review is also great but again the 79% seems a little low
They get the album though, that it has a lot more to say than pretty much most every other album released this year, only you have to pay really close attention to work it out
It's the least likely state of the world address/political album going, but that is actually what it is

Probably they're under rating it because he's not a household name and no one wants to make him one.

Yeah, I think this is his best album, near perfect in fact, but he still just has that feel of a 'steady Eddie' type of artist. I guess the feeling is you can just award every Cass album a 75-85% sort of score and be done with it. I think a couple of his albums are better than that though.
I'm enjoying 'I'm a Shoe' as a closer more and more, plus I definitely think Rancid Girl is a fun tune if a weird pick esp as a track 2
