So the vocalist's dad founded a band called XTC in the 80s and played with Iggy Pop and Bowie, no wonder Finn is talented af.

Don't really like Axolotl or King of Chrome. A Bit on the Side, Low Lays the Devil, In the Blood and In the Nightfall are kind of just okay. The rest of the album is very very likeable. Not sure if 3.5 is really what I'll stick with on this. Might go down to 3.0. Was hoping for something a bit better with that awesome cover and with the initial high ratings and reviews.

Finns dad was in XTC??!! One of the better new wave & post punk bands. Their side project The Dukes of Stratosphear created one of my favourite EPs of all time. Didn't know there was any relation there. TIL

Am I the only one hearing a little Nick Cave in the title track?
|
| |
Whole album has some serious nick cave strut going on.

Yup, my first reaction to the album was 'poor Nick Cave releasing a new album a few weeks after this'
Similar to the new Cass McCombs where my reaction was 'poor Wilco releasing an album in a few weeks time'

I'm going to buy this tomorrow bloody love it. Been dipping in and out of their old stuff and there's some crackers.
Fella seems to have the fire but looks a total berk in that hat.

who are your other contenders? The Drones will be up there I'm guessing?
|

Album Rating: 5.0
Yeah, this and The Drones are top 2, and then I'm also digging Glass Animals, Wild Beasts, The Jezabels, Autolux, Radiohead on a level below
|

Autolux was a contender.

Haven't listened to the Autolux will check it out
It's been a great year for music, only thing I'd say is it's still a bit light on definitive 'career best' stuff - the Radiohead, Bowie, Wild Beasts and Richmond Fontaine I liked a lot but I wouldn't say any are the band's absolute greatest work

yeah but theyre fairly long careers we're talking about

I'm guessing this might be a career best. Otherwise maybe Run the Jewels or Bon Iver could surprise everyone.
