Seeing a Kanye album and a 1* review, naively not looking at the name of who wrote it before clicking, I was ready to read the average 'I don't think this is actually that low but drama and hyperbole is all I know' that usually adorns a popular-artist-low-rating.
However, this is a pretty accurate reflection of his shortcomings and I now feel a bit wrong for even liking Kanye at all. So good job!

Really can't stand hip-hop reviews made by people who don't listen to hip-hop much on this site

Thanks Toad
Gwyn I've listened to more hip hop in my life than you is a fact get over it as quick as possible
Also this album is as much a pop album (plus there are r n' b and electro influences) so again please don't

i actually don't mind the review and it's definitely well written but it's got that "only someone who can't get negged would write something like this" aroma all over it. I should probably bump down my rating I don't remember really actually liking anything on this.

Guilty as charged Calc - there is an element of me enjoying being a contrib on this one knowing I'll avoid having to see all the negs...but a couple of users wanted a Doof Kanye review is my defence
Review is honest, and people saying I 'hate Kanye' or I'm bashing on him aren't seeing the whole picture here - I do believe he's sporadically capable of greatness

Also in defence of using low scores in reviews - there's a popular argument on the site that because the music on an album is at least competent that should mean ratings shouldn't dip below a 2 or 2.5...that is the record exec stage, most stuff on this site has been officially released, it's been judged musically of worth by someone. Musical competence = 1/5. That's the starting point. Everything else adds to the 1.
There's a little more than just musical competence here but for me not a lot more so a 1.5 is the honest rating. What would bring me back to this album?

Keep doin you Doof. You have a distinct voice that I generally enjoy reading, that's all that matters in the end.

Two that spring to mind:
Destroyer 'Kaputt'
Ben Folds Five 'Ben Folds Five'
There's probably loads, it's hard to remember with hindsight
I tend to give things more of a chance as I get older, when I was a kid I'd mistrust and dislike a lot of stuff at first

I remember hating Mike Patton's vox on 'The Real Thing' at first lol
For about six months I'd tell anyone who asked at school I thought they were a shit band
|

Kaputt is great. It went in one ear and out the other the first time or two but it definitely grew on me. And I've no other experience with Destroyer's work.

Yeah kaputt does have a certain something.

Lambchop's 'Is a Woman' I'd dismissed as average for years then re-listened to it and thought it was incredible
Joanna Newsom 'Ys' I disliked for a while

Piglet - my masterpieces of the decade would be:
- Destroyer 'Kaputt'
- The National 'Trouble Will Find Me'
- Oneohtrix Point Never 'Garden of Delete'
- The National 'High Violet'
- possibly 'Blackstar' given time
'Shaking the Habitual' I should revisit, haven't checked it in ages

I haven't listened to this album and am as such neutral on the matter. Review is well written and said everything it needed to.

Cheers Ov and anatelier, I am pleasantly surprised most people here have just accepted I genuinely was disappointed with this and that I put that across reasonably well. I feared the worst with this review.
