Problems With This Album:
1. It's two thirds longer than it needs to be
2. It's 90% repetitive ballads
3. It's all but entirely devoid of riffs of any distinction
4. It's full of absurd, atrocious lyrics
5. It's supposed to have bass, right
6. It's full of over-the-top vocalizations in places that don't warrant it
7. It's entirely front loaded with the best tracks all occurring in the first 20 minutes
8. It's as if they used a drum machine instead of an actual person, why is Mangini even here
9. It's use of orchestration grows exhausting after the first half hour
Positives about the album:
1. It's not as poorly mastered and mixed as the previous album.

lol, I don't think you honestly think it's a 1.5. I would love to see a review from you. Art is subjective, sure, back up your claims. A 1.5 = these baboon degenerates can't play with these instruments, my ears can't take it, what is this noise?

Honestly all of that could be a 100% true and that still wouldn't warrant a 1.5. I said a full fledged review, not a list of pet peeves. You more or less essentially said what the OP said, and the 3.5 is perfectly justified.

9 minutes in and it already feels like this is going to be a chore to get through all of it
|

That sounds like a 1.5 to me. Something can be competently played and produced and still merit a 1.5, especially when it's composed, arranged and paced as poorly and with as little taste as Dream Theater generally does.

Oh absolutely smaug, clash of the people who want the same grindy metal over and over vs those who wanted a change of pace.

debatable

Or perhaps clash of the people who want textures that don't sound like they're made of plastic, harmony that wasn't fully explored in the 18th century, soloing that actually serves a purpose instead of endless wanking, a singer that actually sounds genuine instead of histrionic, a drummer who sounds invested, and general expression of emotions that don't sound like a robot writing an algorithm for what human expression is supposed to sound like, resulting in a string of awful cliches....
vs. the people who are pleased with all of that.
