To me, that's offensive. But apparently they love her over in Japan.

i find that extremely difficult to believe. but at the same time it makes sense for japanese people to be more ok with what is normally considered excessive cultural appropriation compared to other cultures considering their culture often fetishizes western biology and has spent years and years trying to mirror our 'civility' after estranging themselves from the modern world for so long. if that makes sense.

"she's not the first or last westerner to be fascinated with japan, it's nothing new. by that logic everybody with an anime avatar is appropriating japanese culture

besides she probably just does it to attract people who are into the japanese/anime aesthetic, it's not that deep"

^ I know quite a few people in that area, not a single one who's ever heard of Grimes.

I will also note that I do find people who think that Japan is a uberdeveloped meritocracy utopia for geek and nerd culture are shortsighted idiots that barely understand the country's history. Although it is changing, the largest demographic is still in the "nationalist, xenophobic, uber-conservative"-ballpark.

Japan is really not what westerners have chalked it up to be. I think I told you this last night Wolfe but I'll say it again. I was there this year and seriously, I think people gontonjapan for all the wrong reasons. It's not some otaku blade runner dystopia.
It's a land literally split in two. The stiflingly oppressive culture of fitting in against this weird western influenced youth eager to explore the world outside Japan.
What baffled me was the stores with floor after floor of Loli porn. Basically child porn but drawn.
My partner was also assaulted by an older Japanese man there, no doubt western culture influencing an already existing sense of entitlement.
But people stop romancing Japan pronto.
If you go there with real expectations and stop the bullshit you'll find it's a lovely place that like any other country, has its problems and its succes stories.

EDIT: fuck u autocorrect

They can do whatever the hell they want, I'm just not in favor of misconstruing things - particularly if it's that one-dimensional.

Well, in other words: Japan is twisted 6 ways to hell and backwards just like quite a few other nations, just with a different background and partially in different ways or to different degrees. Obviously that's not all about it, but you gotta take the good with the bad.

Idk about this whole "cultural appropriation" stuff, seems like the lines are a bit vague - some dipshit tried to tell me I'm culturally appropating black culture when I listen to rap and without specifically caring about its origins even if the origins have no specific relevance to a local scene.

Hang on a sec.

I've been to Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima and saw nothing but beautiful and astounding sights. The people are the most courteous, honest, respectful and obligating people anywhere......fucking mad to think they used to bayonet babies and fly fighter planes into warships. *Titter, giggle, coy hand to mouth. Peace sign.*

Debates about society, etc. aside, this album intrigues me. Never heard Grimes before, never had any plans to, but in sampling this it seems incredibly promising.

"because every other culture hasnt done just as fucked up things or worse"

That is exactly the point, though. They are neither better nor worse than anyone else.

Except for Scandinavia, Scandinavia is better than anyone.

Not 70yrs ago for no other reason than being told to do it.

Yanks were raping and stoving in the face of some 80yr old in a rice field but it was small scale and that wasn't necessarily an order.
