They really shouldn't have rushed this. Dangit.

Rushed is exactly what it feels like. That and a combination of trying to appease the black metal fanbase that ridiculed Sunbather. The parts where they do try to go for the Sunbather-esque segments aren't half as good as they were previously. They definitely caved under pressure.

i'm starting to be able to guess talon's reviews based on what the band is and when the official stream came out.

i don't think they rushed this :]

I agree, but I kinda find it lazy and a waste of a good riff to throw something out for a few secs and then never revisit it, especially when it could have made an epic ending.

I suppose we'll have to disagree there, since I think they were going for songs that seemed to grow and evolve as they went on, and returning to a riff earlier in the song wouldn't mesh with this philosophy

Though I should mention I think the first song is a bit TOO uncohesive

I feel like they had a singular vision for what they wanted to achieve on Sunbather and that's why it turned out so well, here I feel like I did when I first listened to Roads of Judah - they have no idea who they want to be.

no they actually did; they said in interviews they were pressed for time and had to think more about whether it was justifiable to play around with an idea more or just keep it as-is and move on to something else.

So does listening to the whole album give a better impression than listening to a couple of tracks separately? I've only caught what they leaked to the public before today.

Edit: I mean before they made the whole album available for streaming.

I always liked Brought to the Water, but Come Back is even worse in the context of the album because it follows Baby Blue which is easily the worst track here.

just went and read that interview, very interesting read. so, i'll say that even though they were in a time crunch, it doesn't feel rushed to me :]

There are some awkward sounding parts for sure, mainly in "Come Back," but overall I didn't find this rushed.

Thanks for pointing those out Jac, I'll keep editing. CC welcome if anyone has any.

As for mentioning the same bands as NPR's article, Deafheaven were the first ones to say that they paid tribute to Oasis, so I kind of had to include that in there. And those Slayer riffs in the first few songs are so obviously inspired by Raining Blood that I don't get what else I'm supposed to say about them.

Those parts don't sound anything like Slayer. They are like Bathory b-sides more than anything else. They work well in "Brought to the Water" but by the time you hear them again in "Come Back" it's just like... dooooo they know any other black metal riffs, or...?

All three bands I mentioned, and included in the NPR article, were mentioned at one time or another by Deafheaven themselves in being included in New Bermuda.

My joke in the parenthesis is a bit open ended, since that "Champagne Supernova" ending Arcade mentioned also sounds remarkably like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YcNzHOBmk8

NPR also said "Daniel Tracy's choice, melodic drumming." so I'm not sure how willing I am to trust them
