I don't feel I can ding it below a 3
That's cool but it's just jarring when you read the review and see the score. They should align and I don't see this review should be the exception.
Because they're boring, overabundant, and formulaic, which contributes to a track's dullness. They're a cop out when something more interesting could have been done.
I guess some of that comes down to preference. I still think you're going to be disappointed going forward if you dislike their reliance on atmospherics. I kind of see it as part of their identity at this point.
As for risk, I see this as a refinement of some of the ideas on Altered State. I don't think it's as safe or predictable as you say. Dan in particular adds a lot of variety and stylistic differences that Ashe did not. Also, when did predictability come to be defined as a bad thing?
the notes he's singing in the range he's using being drowned by the notes and ranges of the other instruments.
That's called frequency masking and it's still mostly a mix thing. The problem with your argument there is that the bass and vocals are in very different frequency ranges and rarely clash. Even if that happens, it's something the mixer would accommodate for. I hear what your saying, I just think it's more that Dan's vocals need to be boosted a couple dBs in the mix.
___
I appreciate your back and forth. I'm not trying to be negative or argue. I just like discussing music with people.

I actually like how his voice is mixed. It's clear to me, but more so than average mixes, it's buried just a little bit and almost treated like an equal instrument with the rest of the band.
I would also like to reiterate the perfect tone and mix of the bass here. I have wanted bass at the forefront like this for ages, and to see my favorite band do it flawlessly is a thing of beauty.

the first like 20 seconds make me squirm because it sounds like a poorly done mashup between a tompkins acapella and a tesseract demo
plus that filter makes me want to die
aside from that its not too bad but not worth listening to for me when theres four other tracks id jump to in an instant
