Yeah I agree the approach and the way each track builds is not genre bending or anything. I just actually really enjoyed the fact that I didn't have to dig for layers like I do with the majority of good metal.

I listened to about half of Plains if the Purple Buffalo. I think I feel pretty much the same about that as you do about this.

I want to thank you though, for not arguing with me over personal taste or being a dick in general. I see more of that around here than is comfortable so I appreciate your polite candor.

shels is good yes. Istantly relatable like this album, yet there's more to discover upon consequent listens (though not all too much)

"Purple Buffalo" walks all over this tbh. I listened to this again and a 3 may be a bit generous. I mean it's not bad, but it's really really really generic.

Eh well the "it's generic" argument always confused me. Technically it just means the music neatly and obviously fits into a particular genre. There's lots of similar stuff. But that seems to carry a hugely negative connotation and I don't agree with that.

I prefer when an artists finds a niche within a particular style and settles in with that, working to perfect their version of a specific established type of music. Every now and then something very original comes along and that's great, but a lot of attempts I see to do that don't sit well with me.

Like everyone here fawns over Kayo Dot but their mixture of styles is a huge turnoff for me.

Tldr: generic has come to be associated with "meh" but I feel differently.

i really wanted to like this more considering how good "a gallant gentleman" is but the other tracks just aren't doing it for me

Even the end of Challenger - Flight? Meeeeeh

I used to have on old ID here, AngelPhoenix. I left because I honestly started to think there was something wrong with me in situations like this (like we both have Havietty at a 5 but are way far apart on this one, like am I crazy?)

Then I realized the only thing that was wrong was me thinking that in the first place lol. I hope I get to write more, I really enjoyed doing this review.

so what I've concluded about this record it that it is absolutely uber-generic instrumental post-metal in every sense of the term, but it is also borderline impossible to make uber-generic instrumental post-metal that's better than this

and you should accept that you will disagree with noctus from time to time (every time) and that there's nothing you can do about it because he's a weirdo

Can't remember the last time I was so engaged listening to a post-rock record.

Absolutely phenomenal record, and a worthy review to boot.

^^^^duuuude I know lol. We have some intersections though (SAOR! m/m/m/)

And yeah, again, I don't disagree that instrumentally/structurally there's nothing mindboggling going on, but something about the stories they used for inspiration and the way they are able to convey the emotions connected to those stories just came together and blew me away first two listens.

yeah, it's kinda weird but I think this would be a 3.5-4 at most if it weren't for the concepts and their artworks. they really add something special to the music for me.

Yeah, the concepts I think are the best part about the album. The band does a great job of using each song to match up with the story behind the song, especially Challenger.

Giving this a first listen now, pretty gripping stuff for instrumental post-rock/metal.

Challenger fucks me up. It's like, you know they don't make it. But if feels like they could. And then they don't and it's just crushing.
