Finally got around to revisiting this and it definitely deserves a bump, significantly more satisfying than I remember it being

should this band have prog metal / jazz fusion tags? I’m not familiar with their other work and I’m looking at the RYM tags to verify
Idk thinking mathcore instead of prog and then replacing jf with experimental works (in the absence of ‘avant-garde’)

fuck no
this band has nothing to do with prog metal or jazz fusion for fuck sake
they should have death metal as the first and foremost most important tag
then they should have mathcore
then grind or experimental or even noise rock tbh

Album Rating: 4.5
Yes but what if we gave this a post-hardcore tag?

yeah, I agree with you Mort. I just didn't know if there was some context I was missing having not heard their other material (yet)...
ooh, nice it's been changed!

And my former self was a massive pleb for being unable to digest this beast. Shit is fire! There's a surprising amount of variation / spacing that I definitely cannot recall existing. I just remember it being a sonic assault, lol... I mean it still kinda is, but in a way which actually makes sense now

Yessss welcome. I had a really similar experience when I rejammed their discog a few months back, where originally their music was FAR to chaotic for me, the underlying structues and ideas have really shown themselves to me as I've broadened my tastes. Abscess Time in particular I completely underestimated, that album is a monolith

Nice. I was still in my fledgling chaotic disso-metal stage at the time I think. Some things (eventually) stuck, a lot didn't. This was a tough little nut.
along similar lines I tried revisiting Portal's "Outre" with less satisfying results, yet it also felt like the sheer cacophony had been turned down a notch
so yeah, new Ulcerate is out but I'm getting the urge to jam What Passes For Survival and not sure I can do all the disso at once. Decisions decisions

Pyrrhon were one of my toughest musical nuts too (wow what a sentence), but damn if they're not the only group of that whole disso-metal era I still regularly return to.
Portal are cool, I guess, but its very paint by the numbers dissodeath imo, as have been Ulcerate's last few releases for me (even if they're certainly quite good), if I were itching for Pyrrhon I'd scratch it with Happy Victim's Creed and not turn back.
