OK - a few listens now, searching for that hidden gem. They're all playing their hearts out, you can feel the effort that's been put into this, but Bono really isn't doing any of the songs justice.
He tries to say too much most of the time, rather than just keeping it simple. When he does sing a repetitive line on a chorus, he goes with the most basic melody that first came to mind.
"The troubles" is the best sounding song on the album and that's because the chorus isn't sung by Bono.
Someones got to stop this guy and say "Bono, throw that last idea out and do it again... and then do it AGAIN!". I really want these guys to go out with one big bang but it's not going to happen if what they record are the first melodies that Bono comes up with. Enough of this "Get into a room and make a song in the moment" crap. Effort please!

Only forty-five seconds must have lapsed between these two lines. What a champ.

"Happened to find this on my itunes lol, turned out to be a nice surprise. Great record "
every time U2 get cornered musically they work out of it, or change things up. it can surprise
after WAR they were supposed to do more of the same, War was a great success, they were on the cusp of BIG. then a step backward while moving forward at the same time with TUF. so many did not understand that record at the time, but it lead to TJT. a HUGE album it could only lead to a let down and near artistic implosion. RAH was a mixed bag, the movie was self-indulgent, and U2 buckled under its own weighty earnestness. the 80's were over, and so was U2
except they put on make-up and women's clothing, went to Germany, nearly broke up, and came out swinging with something unlike U2, but just like U2. AB was brilliant, really. it could have killed 'em, instead it saved them. Zooropa was a success in it's own right, but then they went too far with all of it with POP. that was a failed "pop art" album and concept, and U2 closed up shop for a few years, and more.
what to do now? Nirvana had come and gone, music had changed somewhat. well, they go forward while looking WAY back, Edge get's his "I Will Follow" guitar out, and here comes ATYCLB. they scale it back from grandiose and go forward, a smaller band. Vertigo rocked, No Line....saw them played out again, and that big, stupid tour. now what? this is what. another breath of fresh air from a band that will not go away. i think i like it
U2 is not the most original band around, or the most talented. but for what they are now and have been, they are creatively and artistically risky. at least as much as any commercially viable, worldwide rock 'n roll band has ever been
