I guess on some level, the fact that neither version inspires awe or despair in me should mean something about the quality of these songs

I agree with you there, irving. It's like they didn't want to commit themselves emotionally one way or another

@Talons I know, right? All the Wars is definitely underrated, it might honestly be my second favorite TPT after Little Man, so much great catchy, proggy and atmospheric alt-rock in there.

It's by far my least favorite on the album, the riff is bland compared to the brilliant riffing of the opening three songs, the lyrics are pretty bad too, and it's quite repetitive, and the climax at the end is cool but could have been better. I admit I might have gone too far saying it was lame, but it's definitely not on par with the other songs for me.

Yeah Build a World doesn't really do much as a song, it starts pretty cool but then Bruce just keeps repeating the same stuff over and over...

I think this new album is much better than the last two especially All the wars that bored me quite a lot with its heavy riffs and monotonous 7/8 and 5/8 rhythm. Magnolia is much more varied, melodic, interesting and colourful. I also don't understand why Little Man is "the classic album" here. For me Variations on a Dream and Tightly unwound are the best ones without any doubt. And Magnolia follows in their footsteps.

wtf man, the use of 7/8 and 5/8 time signatures was brilliant in All the Wars. It was a different approach to unusual time sigs, nothing monotonous in my opinion. For me on the other hand, on Magnolia, they use 7/8 rythms a couple of times, but in a pretty uninspired way

I don't care if they use 128736489736897643/8 rhythms, just make sure the songs are worth listening to

These ones certainly aren't =(

I'm not saying they must use complex rythms, I'm just saying if they want to do it they should at least feel inspired

I'm loving All The Wars so far, almost as good as SHIM. I'm hoping this continues in the same direction but maybe with a little more musical variety
