@Talons To me The Count of Tuscany is at least as good as ITPOE, if not even better. I mean, just for that acoustic part in the end it gets a place in my top 10

The lyrics and subject matter is so bewildering and misplaced I just can't get into it anymore. It's like "I thought you were gonna eat me" and then he says "no of course not, you can leave whenever you want" and Petrucci's like "oh ok cool." The End. It makes that overemotional cheesy ending with the singing and lyrics that much dumber and confusing, a slightly better version of the end of Illumination Theory. Tuscany is a good song though, I don't really mind the soundscape even if it's way too long

Yeah, the lyrics are just, ridiculous. You nailed it pretty well, he could have told his story in 10 seconds, yet he apparently decided to make it last 19-minutes. And yeah, it seems to me that Illumination Theory is just like a lesser version of Count of Tuscany. The only new thing is the orchestral parts, which work actually pretty well in it. IT is still a great song, infinitely better than everything else on s/t

The first half is great aside from all the times that Portnoy opens his mouth

Flawed but ultimately an album highlight

Well it's the best song on BC&SL along with The Best of Times imo. All the others (except Wither) are very good but they just seem too disjointed and incohesive to me. Nightmare as some of their best riffs and melodies, but their's practically nothing linking them to each other. And The Shattered Fortress is just a collection of all the riffs and ideas of the twelve-step suite, but again, not put together in a cohesive way

True. Finally Free might possibly be in my top 5 too. It's got everything I could ask for in a DT song, whilst still managing to restrain itself from cheesy wank

Very happy to see Scarred in someone's Top 10. I'm keeping track of my favorites as I go along, which I'm sure will get me more "WTF!?" comments than any of my upcoming reviews.

Doubtful unless you have something like Forsaken as your top 10

Or something heinous like Build Me Up, Break Me Down

Yeah your top 5 would have to be:
1. You Not Me
2. I Walk Beside you
3. Build me Up, Break Me Down
4. Forsaken
5. Along for The Ride

I Walk Beside You is probably the least awful one there. Just a U2 ripoff
