Thank you death! You try The Mantle yet?

" the only difference here from marrow is that its 1000x more boring and is completely devoid of all interesting/innovative ideas. "
How is this anything like Marrow? If this can be compared to any of their older albums it would be with Ashes and even then both are pretty different in execution.

i think this one is a lil better than Marrow.. The only song i jam from Marrow is Black Lake and the only one I jam on this is Plateau of the Ages..
Kinda forgettable album tbh.

Both are forgettable, but Marrow is easily better for me.

I can't help but feel like they should have just stopped after Ashes. It was (for me at least) their magnum opus, something they would never be able to top, and of course nothing they've released since then has been anywhere near consistent. Marrow had moments of greatness but was directionless... this is just meh through and through.

This was a real suprise. Usually Agalloch puts out really good work. This was fell flat on almost everything.

Agreed funeral it certainly falls flat. The Astral Dialogue is still brilliant though.

theyre both much more rooted in a black metal aesthetic than the direction ashes hinted at them taking (which was what initially made marrow kind of a curveball). this isnt a copy of marrow at all, but it is definitely an extension of the sound palette marrow worked with.
i dont really find this similar to ashes in the slightest bit, if anything this hearkens back to pale folklore than it does any of the other initial 3 albums.

haha damn spirit a 1 for marrow? Why you dislike this band so much?
I just find them so damn boring. I don't like the mix of genres either.

"theyre both much more rooted in a black metal aesthetic"
I'd say this is much more rooted in post metal than black metal, hence my comparison to Ashes (a very loud Ashes). The production is way too loud and full for BM and the staples of the genre such as tremolo picked riffs and blast beats have been toned down enormously compared to Marrow.

Not yet, Mongi. I will soon though. Veddy soon.

Yeah, but the staples kicked so much arse on Marrow, and that album's production took it to another level
|

but the production on marrow is so god awful, at least they fixed that on this album
there are parts on marrow that i listen to now and think how could anyone have listened to this and though "yeah, this works". especially when they try to start harmonizing melodies, everything just sounds so asynchronous and immiscible.
i kind of get what they were trying to do, but it just didnt work at all

Just bought this on CD, will listen tomorrow and am very curious what it's like. I love their first three, Marrow was a huge disappointment upon my first listen, but has grown a lot over time and is sitting at around a 3.6 for atm

Marrow is def better than this, as are the first 3 obviously. I really don't think this is bad at all though. Obviously seems that way compared to their others, but still.

At this point I just hope that's how I feel about this

It just doesn't have a lot that's as memorable as the previous albums. I don't see how people think this sucks though.

I can understand how people don't like Marrow, it is really disjointed and inconsistent, and a lot of the more aggressive black metally sound is handled pretty awkwardly at times. But there's enough strong and interesting moments to warrant a 3 at least, 3.6 for me currently

I was up and down with Marrow at first, but it's been a solid 4 for me for a good while now.

Hyperion that's how I feel about this sometimes. Production is this is quite bad.
