new album is tight

and with it (much like heritage), i'm noticing a lot of whiny bitches complaining that it's just cleans now, which is amusing if nothing else

I prefer all cleans at this point. But he strains his vocals on occasions, which can be annoying

Yeah he oversings

The cleans on PC are as good as he'll ever be. The production really brings out the quality in his voice a bit more too, but I also find the strains a bit strange and annoying

Most of the complaints so far are that it's not metal and it sounds like 70's prog. No shit sherlock, I think after Heritage it was obviously they were going in that direction so you'd be an idiot to complain about it when you essentially know we aren't getting metal from Opeth right now if ever again.

I luckily haven't come across such person yet. There's plenty of metal out there and opeth have enough of those albums already. Also, variety never hurt anyone

Really? Those people are everywhere I come across them all the time

Most people I know are into pop and alt-rock. There are like 3 metalheads in the year and one is into A7X and Asking Alexandria and the other is into PT, TPT, Opeth, Unexpect but fucking got expelled

Well maybe not people known personally but Heritage majorly divided their fanbase overall, but I think a good number of the dissenters came around, which is why PC has such a high average right now

Oh yeah, definitely. Some of the reactions online, like on reddit and other metal forums were absurd. I think it would have a better average had it been from a new and fresh band

Or if it was Mikael's solo or side project. It'd also get a lot less attention though

Couple of soundoffs bemoaning how Opeth have changed:
"More cheesey monotonous 70s prog with mikael's sub-par clean vocals. Lacks contrast and everything else that made Opeth good"
"Yep, listened to it and I was right. They're is going to be a 70's prog pop band not metal anymore"

You guys should get out more.

I can understand not liking the new style, I didn't for almost a year lol. The thing to remember though is that most of the songwriting is still classic Opeth, even if their signature prog metal is gone. As much as I miss their old sound, I can still manage to enjoy their new style. It sure took a while though

Well if you're into the prog metal and prog rock side, then there should be things that appeal to you from both. It's pretty clear which one I lean towards but the new direction is at least exciting and keeps me guessing

Yeah luckily I've gotten into prog rock a lot more this past year so that's helped me appreciate Heritage, and it does have some prog metal stuff to. I'm glad PC has more though, even some GR sounding parts

Atonement is severely underrated IMO. I wish I could say the same about prog rock, but I'm starting to go off technical stuff in favour of something more atmospheric, but not slow. PC is kinda like that, but this is not

Just this past month or two I haven't progged out a lot besides PC, though Riverside is a great band that places a lot of emphasis on melody and atmosphere as well as prog. I still need to check out Gazpacho though

Album Rating: 4.5
Gazpacho is more art rock than prog, it's just that the songs are pretty long. the atmosphere is the closest thing you'll get to Storm Corrosion and it's really good stuff. Also checkout Messenger - Illusory Blues. Some good prog rock/folk
