I always feel a little guilty for liking this record so much.

Put that guilt aside, baby. The hooks are catchy beyond reason, but that's just a side effect of some of the best songwriting in alt pop/rock
GO-HOD DAMN it's DEAFENING

SOOH SO DEFORMED

There's just something so simultaneously goofy and heart on sleeve about this album, like it's SO overblown, but somehow I buy that he's sincere

I hear you, so many moments could come off as corny in just about any other hands, but when the opening track of your album kicks its beat off from the cadence of a high school cheer routine, and it *fucking works*, you've already gotten away with the whole game

I always thought that segue from the cheerleaders, drums, and guitar screeching into that sort of romantic guitar riff was really beautiful. Then I have to slap myself for liking it. Damn you Matthew G.

Sounds like a once in a generation tightrope mastery of tone.
Should probably 4.5 it < 3

Cheeky. Very cheeky.

This is stadium rock perfected. Got my dad this CD recently in the mail and he loved it (Guy only likes 70s rock). Little wonder he'd never heard of them before.
You guys like any of his other material?

I actually do like bits and pieces off his solo stuff and the album before this one. Some of his wider body of work is too cheesy for me but there's usually a few songs that hit the spot.

And he does a mean (if a bit earnest) cover of Cloudbusting.

Hospital Music and Avalanche both kick ass, yeah. This is the peak, tho

I have Avalanche on this level personally. Fucking timeless for me. Vancouver is also really really good, but not much else comes close. Dont care for Hospital Music.

Vancouver, Avalanche, Audio of Being and Beautiful Midnight are his best. Although I don’t think he’s put out anything bad per se. New one was his strongest since Vancouver once I gave it some time.
“Rooms” on the In a Coma deluxe edition was excellent as well

I do seem to remember Vancouver being strong. I think Avalanche has 21st century living on it, which is one of my faves.

Never actually got around to Vancouver, think that ought to be next on the jam queue, Matthew Good's been scratching an itch this last week

Yeah, reminded myself, Avalanche is probably one of (if not the best) solo outings. Some of the songs on it used to conjure a pretty crappy time, so maybe I kind of blocked it out lol.

My favorites of his as a solo artist are Avalanche, Vancouver, Chaotic Neutral and Moving Walls.
as for MGB I think Underdogs, Beautiful Midnight and The Audio of Being are all solid albums, although the latter two are my favorites.

How good is Suburbia though. Damn.
