I don't think this record's very quirky at all, except for Tots (which is a joke interlude). I also think Sink-O is one of the best tracks on here. The clash of pop and wild tribal drumming is so absolutely endearing on this one. Probably the best album of the year so far.

i'm not that big on the last few songs - not sure if the style just wears thin on me by that point. but the run up until Sink-O I really like

The album gets weirder in the 2nd half for sure, but I love it. Tots is a skippable track for me, but it was kind of expected.

Nah man the way to enjoy Tots is to have it on repeat in the hot summer sun

i'm with ya, greg. surprised by the low ratings for this tbh

I'm not surprised that Sputnik users don't get it. Not the kind of music that's praised here. Plus, this record seems ahead of its time. It had respectable 83/100 on metacritic last time I checked, though.

yah, i more so meant the ratings from staff/contribs, but it doesn't really seem like sputnik's thing. an 83 on metacritic is definitely respectable though
i must have played this record a good 10 times now

I've probably played it about 20 times already. It's safe to say it's gonna be in my top 5 of the year.

right so Time of Dark is brilliant why do the first 2 songs have to be so terrible ?
|
| |
time of dark is probably my favourite. nothing wrong with the first two tracks though! the choruses are maddeningly infectious. i suppose it depends on how it's perceived though; i can certainly see why someone would find it grating but i think it's a lot of fun

Yeah. I dig the first 2 tracks as well. My favorites probably are The Real Thing, Stop That Man, Left Behind and Sink-O... so the craziest tracks on here. Time of Dark is very African sounding, which makes it great too.

yeh this hits me in a similair way to that St Vincent album, i love some of the songs but some others really annoy me, Greg seems to be reviewing a lot of stuff that does that to me recently

just listening to stop that man its great, but i hated the 2 before it haha
|
| |
greg: i love the atmosphere of that track (time of dark). also the real thing is the song i loved most for my first few playthroughs
mena: which songs do you dislike on st. vincent? that's another one of my faves

Stop that man makes me bounce hard. The new St. Vincent awesome too.

I cant remember gyro, need to listen again some time but there was something that sounded like madonna on there that i didnt like. The smoother sounding stuff probably is what i didnt go for but the jumpier quirkier songs on that were great.

The new Neneh Cherry's essential too...

yah, birth in reverse, rattlesnake, and digital witness are all quirky and some of my favourites. but i love the softer stuff too - i prefer your love is one of her best songs imo
