This to me is their best balance between their 'tribal roots' rhythmic stuff and their traditional metal chops (still a bit of thrash influence).
'Roots' is still good, the nu metal influence works well (because it's a rhythmic based genre) but then Soulfly got too naff with the nu metal/tribal influence and Sepultura without Max have all the personality of Theresa May reading from an autocue
Also 'Arise' is better than BTR, easy

This is a classic indeed.

yeah, listening to BTR and the drumming is just so much more generic thrash drumming - misses a HUUUUUUUUGE part of this band's appeal imo
it's great thrash drumming....but it's only thrash drumming, only so much room for personality and creativity in that style (again, shoot me)
also Max definitely became a way more distinct and charismatic vocalist as he went on, by this album they were getting as politically in your face as RATM too, so again a totally different feeling

Yeah it’s different for sure. Better? Fuck no lol.

it's more unique that's for sure, so there's that
BTR they were definitely just some more thrash disciples (good ones but still)
They're their own men here, no one else was releasing an album with material like Kaiowas, The Hunt, Biotech and Amen all sharing space.

I mean I don’t find this to be all that unique honestly.

I have no accurate measure for how ignorant you are with the subgenre for me to correct you on this. There are a lot of thrash releases with generally varied drumming.

I just use my ears Cas, there's less variety in tempo with thrash because it's a genre that itself defines the tempo range to be v fast a lot of the time. For me, literally the drums in just 'Refuse/Resist' alone are more engaging than anything on BTR.
I think the vocals and drums get more interesting after BTR - I will concede that most of the great ideas the band would have in terms of guitar sound they've at least had a nibble at by BTR though, but then again I think they flesh out and improve some of these sounds/ideas later too
I mean one of the albums is a pure thrash album and the other is a sort of thrash/power metal/tribal mash of things going on - so if you want pure thrash you're better off with BTR. In it's own way I find Chaos AD more intense - Max is definitely harder to ignore

This isn’t even close to BTR lol. [2]

the intro to Territory is the essence of the band to me - ominous apocalyptic tribal dread, and scathing political fury
if you don't get it...you don't get it
in its own way at least as accomplished as anything on BTR
the 'Metalhead Handbook for Leets' may say different, but I piss on that tome every time

What makes those other two albums better than this?
Genuinely curious because I'm not sure if I'd dig them more

they are considered more 'traditional' by metallers basically, traditional thrash

This one doesn’t riff anywhere near as hard imo and is kinda boring.

I deconstructed this album with a view to analysing the juxtaposition between thrash and expansive creative ideal and came to the conclusion that it fully fucks face like a cunt.

it might not riff as hard, but Max and the drums both go harder :/
this album sounds 'tougher' to me than BTR, that album just sounds more trad and 'riff is king'

I don’t think Max goes harder here at all tbh.

Okay so I probably won't dig them as much lmao
The drums here are insane, the final trio are just excellent fucking metal

No thrash riffer for sure. If that's your thing then BTR & Arise are where it's at.
Gotta agree about the tribal vibe thing though. That is where this album shines and keeps me interested.
