"she's way too in love with basic jazz snoozeries"
Well, newest album only has one track of that. It's mostly her live shows recently that have jazz renditions of her songs. Not a bad thing - it works a lot of the time, but I'm waiting for the day she'll pull out a rock show again. Not sure if that will ever happen, sadly.

listening now to the new one - mixed bag so far, all over the place but some cool stuff. 5th track sounds almost like a Prince jam. the jazz song is great too
most recent album I had was Sanmon Gossip, own nothing by Tokyo Jihen and seen very little live footage so harder for me to really place it.
and kudos to JAPANESE MASTERING ENGINEERS for continuing on their quest to eradicate dynamic range. i wonder if they hate themselves as they watch the meters constantly in the red

also tree, this has more guitar driven rock songs than big band/jazz influence, especially towards the end.

Yep, this album is way too damn loud. It's weird, because all her past albums have pretty good production and mastering

Production on this rules, used to really annoy me so I see why people don't like it. Suits Shiina's style on this perfectly.

I always compare Shiina Ringo to Radiohead.
Muzai Moratorium = The Bends
Shouso Strip = Ok Computer
Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana = Kid A
And i LOVE them all.

I've been on a certain musical journey lately, a quest to find the most transcendental/ethereal-sounding music in the world. It's fascinating to hear music that sounds completely out-of-body and brings us to the realms of fantasy, in which we may never want to come back to reality. So far, new age and folk have been doing the trick, as well as various works in jazz and ambient music. What surprises me, however, is that one of the most gorgeous examples of an otherworldly musical experience comes in the form of an early-2000s Japanese rock album.
