This dabble with dubstep and EDM is an obvious attempt to cash in with the current electronic trend,
So what was their last electronic remix album about then?
|
| |
And the one before that
|
| |
And the one before that one
|
| |
Make no mistake: this is an electro/dubstep record, not a rock one.
How could we be mistaken when it was always marketed as such?
Basically, this is a bad review
|
| |
The entire album is based in electronic and dubstep roots, and they know it.
Um, IT'S AN ELECTRONIC REMIX ALBUM
|
| |
since the overuse of drops and breakdown
More like the overuse of reference to non-existent drops
Okay, I'm done

Here's some constructive criticism, friendo:
1. TEASE: You sort of explicitly jump into the vibe that the album isn't good from Sentence 1. When you give away your gist so early, it feels abrupt and it makes the rest of your review sound repetitive, even if it's not. Experiment with intro anecdotes, formats and ledes, as they are usually the most difficult part of writing a good review.
2. STUDY: There's nothing wrong with trying to review a genre of music that you're unfamiliar with, but it does demand a degree of outside investigation. You don't need to be a religious follower of the genre to properly review it, but you said yourself that radio EDM was your only source of comparison when writing this review. That's slim pickings. Dive into some other EDM subgenres, maybe earlier ones, to get the full story. Like I said, you don't need to know everything about EDM to review it. If you had to know absolutely everything about a genre to review it, no one would have the guts to experiment and try new things in media criticism.
3. VARY: A review will sound very stale if words, phrases and sentence structure stay the same throughout. Subject-predicate structure is the most common structure, but it can be easier to avoid with shorter clauses with colon, semicolon or comma punctuation to break it up. Variety is the spice of life and it can do wonders to make a review read less like a bulleted list and more like actual prose. Read your review out loud; it really does help you hear how well it's written.
4. PROOFREAD: Plain and simple, be sure to check spelling and grammar. It's easy to miss, but it's paramount to making a review look and read cleanly and professionally.
Hope these tips have helped. These aren't exhaustive, but I (like many) want to help writers improve here. Keep practicing and you'll see results.
