I'm pretty psyched to listen to this. I've only heard downward spiral, and it's very awesome.

This is very different from TDS, if you like it than I guess you can make your way through the rest of their discog quite fearlessly

I find the rest of the album pretty uninspired, though maybe it will get more interesting over time.

"oh god another excellent album that is going to be wrongfully rated because "too many people like it". Classic sputnik."
Nope, just glad to see that this polarizes people and sparks discussion past "omg this is a great album, what's your favorite track?!?!11"

Wizard, just stfu. your tastes in music is shit anyway. Rating this 1.5 isnt even being objective....go jerk off to a shitty converge album faggot
Another one of these poser elitist cocksuckers that thinks they are too good for mainstream music I see. I suppose artists are not allowed to evolve, you just want the same album over and over again, but of course if NIN does that you'll criticize for not being innovative. It's a catch 22 cause either way you'll find something to nitpick. Get over yourself.
Hahaha love how both of these users are brand new to the site and have no clue what my tastes really are. If you were smart enough to look at some of my ratings, they would reflect that I've loved Reznor's evolution throughout the years. Your both obviously 14 and discovering music for the first time.
My biggest problem with the album is that this is not NIN (and I don't mean that in a nostalgic kind of way). I would say this about any band that completely changed their sound. Why the fuck would you put different music under the same name? I mean if you completely reinvent yourself into shitty pop music, why not just call it something else instead of tail-ending it onto your discography that is of complete night and day difference? Simply put, my argument stands and my rating is not extreme in any way. Fanboy my objection all you want.
wiz, i can definitely see where youre coming from but for me even in the instrumentals i can hear some of trent's
signature style, especially in came back haunted, find my way, and satellite. the vocals are a major part of what make NIN
special though
Her could have easily used this as a solo project though.

Yeah this is boring as fuck, by the numbers NIN. Honestly feels like an insincere cash-in to me.

So you're saying a valid criticism is that you were surprised because you had expectations for how something sounds based on the music regularly put out under a band's name? I'd love to know what you think of Ulver's recent work then.

Loving this album, lots of great hooks and interesting new ideas, mixed with some The Fragile and Pretty Hate Machine era sound, good to have Trent back.

@breaking - Yeah but the front man from Ulver isn't the groups driving factor, nor does he have a side project for his more mellow, alternative musical offerings.
While Wiz may have spoke pretty broadly, and god knows typing all politically/user correct all the time is annoying as shit, I think you also took his example to an extreme. Because this:
... a valid criticism is that you were surprised because you had expectations for how something sounds based on the music regularly put out under a band's name?
is present in almost any review of a band with more than a few albums under their belt.

@Acanthus Well that's a lot different, I honestly think it's strange for anyone to conclude that if an artist has different material they want to put out they should just start another side-project. Names shouldn't factor in that heavily, and what I'm mainly wondering is whether or not Wiz is basing that point he made on a matter of the music's quality, or JUST because it's a different sound for Nine Inch Nails and it wasn't put under another artist's name.

Good points all around, hopefully he comments back to give some more background behind his thoughts.
Did you enjoy the album?

Good enough review, but the constant references to NIN's earlier material get tiresome after a while. Seems lazy, in a way. Easier to say a song 'wouldn't be out of place on TDS', than something original. Because we all know TDS and know what you mean. Dunno. If I was the artist and my work constantly in the shadow of my earlier stuff, after a while I'd be fucking pissed.
