Just as long as you don't have glasses on while I do it. That's just dirty.

Amazing Album...not a 5/5.
That seems strange since /it is/ a classic, but there a few filler songs. *shrug*

Thats why I dont think this album is as good as everyone claims. Even Ozzy admitted Paranoid was originally written as a filler, but its catchy as hell. Master of Reality owns this

Great album, 5/5 for its influence, 4/5 for its songs.

| | | When the heck is the world going to get a decent remaster of the Paranoid album? It's almost ridiculous. No, it is. First up, the guys in Sabbath were no producers and the material was recorded badly by the band to begin with. You compare the production with what Jimmy Page was pulling off over the same time-frame and you question how high were the cats in Sabbath when they took on the production duties themselves.
There's been one remaster that I'm aware of. A twenty-bit deal done by Castle Records, a British label. I never heard the Paranoid title, but I have editions for Master of Realtiy, SBS and Mob Rules from this label. And, while its an improvement, its not really that big of a jump. I know that RHINO remastered material for a Greatest Hits collection and a box set (never heard either).
But they were set to do the individual titles and then release them within a few months. That never happened. Does anyone know why not? One of the most popular, most important bands on the planet, and you can't even get a decent reproduction of the material. The Paranoid CD that they're still selling is an edtion that came out in like 1983, or so. The very first round of CD distribution. Ridiculous.

It'd kick arse to hear this music with today's technology.
| | | There's really no obvious reason why high-quality 24-bit remasters of the first 10 Sabbath albums aren't, at this very moment, on the shelves. It doesn't make any sense. Although there must be something holding the job up. There's no doubt that the very money-conscious Sharon Osbourne must have pursued the re-release of this catalog by now. She had to jump on this opportunity already. So, the absence of these titles can't be for lack of trying.
There must be some other reason (maybe legal) why the old copies of these discs are the only thing still available in the U.S.. I'm not sure if Sharon's father is still alive. But, he was the guy who managed Sabbath in the 70's and had some control over the back catalog as well. If he died, I would assume that this control would pass onto her. Dunno. But, sounds plausible. But, if the day of re-relase never comes, the Castle remasters from '96 are at least a decent substitute. Although being somewhat disappointing, you can definitely hear the difference from them and those very thin original issues.
Has anyone heard that RHINO Black Sabbath Greatest Hits compilation? Supposedly, this was the technology which was to be applied to the individual releases. Maybe, quite possibly, they're waiting for the next generation of technology to be perfected before issuing the new editions. My buddy heard Zeppelin's Mothership collection and said that there was a significant improvement over past Zep releases. But, then I read a couple of articles that said the material was way over-compressed. Anyone hear either one of these double discs?
| | | I must not be keeping up with the news, because here's a 2007 individual release of the Paranoid album from Universal/Strange Days? This is available as a Japanese, mini-LP replica version.

But, one of the reviewers on the page calls attention to this:
However, this is the same master as on the 2002 release, which may or may not be the Castle `90's masters. While they are decent versions, they don't live up to the superior remastered audio on Rhino's The Black Box. The Rhino mastering just simply has more of everything: Better definition, more clarity, better bass, etc.
So, I would inquire about the actual, original release date of the remaster and what technology was used in producing it. But, for cripes sake, get something better than that original issue CD.
