My real problem with Stay What You Are, is that is came right after Through Being Cool, the best album of my highschool years. They had also just released "A drag in D Flat" and "Sell My Old Clothes" on a compilation. SWYA came out and it was so soft, it was just a much different direction than I was expecting. I wanted that edge that they were teasing on the compilation, not soft songs about drowning because your friends are high.
through with being cool is still really good, but it's more typical of pop punk. stay what you are is more ballad-heavy and slower, sure, but is more conceptual and ultimately more meaningful even though the songs are still very simple by themselves.

Ha, well there's a quick way to lose some good faith. In fairness I meant post-Signals pre-Snakes & Arrows Rush. Moving Pictures is still amazing.

Listening to Banshee again (prolly one of my most spinned songs of the year, so much better than the rest of the album not even funny), and it's so frustrating when you think of what could be done with a better production because they're clearly trying to make the instruments have a "punch" to them but it fails so badly

Banshee is the only song where it works regardless of it

It doesn't sound over- nor underproduced, it just sounds muffled and there's no leak to blame, it's the mixing. I got used to that though and love this album as much as Fake History.

There was a bad stream rip, but the album is still mixed lolbad even in FLAC. We can hope for a vinyl with a different mix someday but it's unlikely
