I was listening to this again today and I really can't get into this album. It just sounds much too pompous.

Sure they are talented musicians, but I have a burning feeling that it kinda marks the musicianship of the album into a more novelty-based range.

I can't dig the lyrics, it comes off as deliberately trying to wear their "inspirations" on their sleeve to show off how "deep" they are. Mind you, in general I've always had a disdain for concept albums when lyrics are the concern.

And the vocals are just mind-numbing (or just too polished for my taste).

There are times when I change my mind about albums by giving it a second or third spin, but I still stand by my opinion.

Trivium is pretty decent on them instruments but they are incredibly cheesy. For me BTBAM is one of the few bands that balances cheesiness with meaningful and original music to produce a catchier yet more interesting end result than any other band that asserts to be technical.

Then you obviously don't listen to Circle of Dead Children nearly enough.

This album isnt blatantly political at all. Maybe you should read the review before you comment on the album/band.

1) use proper grammar please.

2) stop being a little bitch. If you want to criticize the album, cool. But be more productive in explaining why.

Fair enough, but this review is about the album, not the band and their interviews on radio.

no it isn't actually. It's "free expression" to the point where you can provide a productive discussion/debate on music. "free expression" isn't a wildcard for baseless remarks and ignorance.

It really isn't that hard to use correct spelling. the vast majority of users on this site do it. Plus it makes your opinion a little more valuable.

and what did u mean by "bit h."

switch to the dark skin.

They haven't been serious in an interview since their EP was released, so I dont know what you've seen. Arif has been serious in a few MuchMusic appearances but that's because he was asked to say his opinion on an issue. Having an opinion does not mean your band is political.

Well ... reading all of this was rather interesting, first debate I've read on this site so far, I don't doubt I'll read more soon enough ...

I personally think Protest the Hero is an amazing band. Kezia in my opinion was one of the best albums released in the past year.

Smite me if you want, I don't care.

It was a valid comment, punk is not metal, stop trying to act like he was being picky.

So what it a band is political? If you dont like hearing bands sing about politics, don't listen to them. This Message Edited On 03.12.06

They arent even being blatant about politics. They used metaphors and literary references to state their stance, which in reality isn't even a definite stance on much.
I have this friend. We'll call him “Max,” because that's his name. Max has said some questionable things in the past (“With Honor are the best straight-edge band ever,” “I didn't know Henry Rollins was in Black Flag,” “I hate Fugazi,”) but I've always let it go. So when Max told me, a while ago, that the new Protest the Hero release was (“bar none!”) his favorite album of all time, I wasn't sure whether to slap him or go buy it.

I should have slapped him. Kezia is an inexcusable waste of time. For their first actual full-length, Protest the Hero has multiplied anything that made them previously laughable: more vague politics and more fake metalcore. Like Anti-Flag, with Thrice guitar parts. Sounds great, right? No, it doesn't, what the fuck is wrong with you? For ten songs, the band refuses to genuinely emote, to do anything but show off their mad skills. It ends up being too wanky to be anything but a soulless mess.

I mean that. It doesn't take the full 43 minutes to realize what's going on here. It seems like the band decided to write the most purposefully technical parts ever and stick them together in the most appropriate way they could. So we get songs like “Heretics and Killers,” and “Turn Soonest to the Sea,” unnecessarily painful exercises in discordance.

The genuine lowlight of the album arrives at the halfway mark with “Blindfolds Aside,” on which the singer's teenage-dirtbag falsetto of “SOOOCIAAAL JUUUUSTIIIIICE” isn't even the worst part. The biggest offense comes at the end of the song, when they tag on a super-experimental acoustic outro, complete with a department store guitar solo.

To top it all off, the production is terrible. Whoever produced this decided to forget about the band's bassist for whatever reason. Instead he opts to up the tinny squealing guitar/singer combination, and over-polish everything. All it does is highlight what's actively ruining this band's music.

See, an overly technical song is not necessarily better than a simple one. Practicing harmonizing guitar parts for hours doesn't make you a good songwriter. Gang vocals every now and then won't improve your hardcore credibility. It's true that these kids can play their instruments. And it's true that they've buried a few catchy parts in this album. But it's also true (and this is a scientific fact) that anyone who's into this sort of thing is a complete and utter dipshit. Sorry, Max.
