"Why is everyone on Meshuggah's nuts? Yes they were the first and brought djent to light but that doesnt mean they are THAT good.
And Fellsilent still wins in the tone category."
INCORRECT
"why does everyone shit on djent? It's really just a guitar tone that Meshuggah came up with"
no one is hating on the tone, just the djent scene and how people actually treat it as a genre.

okay good point. I would agree with that then because it is not a genre.

And Fellsilent still wins in the tone category.

"Why is everyone on Meshuggah's nuts? Yes they were the first and brought djent to light but that doesnt mean they are THAT good. "
See they are that good though, some of the compositions they've come up with are greater than any djent band today. Not only did they start this whole thing but continue to put out quality material and experiment with it in different ways. All these other bands are basically taking what they did and are throwing in some atmosphere, which is all well and good but when you have a million bands doing it, you realize that Meshuggah are the most unique with the sound. Plus they have probably the best groove of any of these new bands.
Oh and their tone is absolutely crushing.

Djent isn't a genre. The word is about as meaningful as 'thall'. Heavier music would be better off if people stop arguing about inane, unimportant stuff like this. From my knowledge, it's not how the band label themselves, and it certainly isn't how I label them (hence dat little pun).
Meshuggah's obviously a stepping stone for this band. I fucking love them. Still one of the best gig's I've been to. I think it's great they're so influential. The band themselves have said, and illustrated, time and time again they love what's sprouted from their seeds (har har). Doesn't mean you can compare apples to pears. Entirely different type of compositions, atmosphere, tone. I'll leave it to you to interpret as to why I put the rec's there.
For a band as classy and quality as Meshuggah, they sure have a mighty vocal part in their fanbase that bounce back and forth between the sides of a triangle formed by obnoxiousness, insipidness and poor-mans elitism. Wonder how they view stuff like this, must get tiring. That or they don't give a shit.

"Djent isn't a genre. The word is about as meaningful as 'thall'."
What gives words meaning? People. Like it or not, many, many people use the word djent to describe this type of music. That in itself is what gives the word meaning. If everyone started calling this type of music "thall," or ANY other word for that matter, it would also have meaning no matter how dumb you personally think it is.
|
| |
I'm just glad there is at least one word that I can use to describe this kind of music
|
| |
Exactly. People just love to hate on the word. The fact of the matter is, if I walked into a room filled with modern metal enthusiasts and said "djent," chances are the majority of them would know exactly what I was talking about. Is that not easier than saying "that style of progressive metal that uses down-tuned guitars a lots of unorthodox rhythms?" The word is a convenience...

Idgaf, Meshuggah is mediocre to me. All these people want to hate on every other band because "it's been done before". What the fuck hasn't these days?
