"That's the thing, it's not like there aren't people that like both. I never said all prog/metal fans are like that, I just said that often they are especially bad for having a cult like mentality. "
But my experiences would point to the opposite. Maybe you just went to the wrong websites and hung out with the wrong people.

andcas, if I'm annoying you then great, but I'm talking with stableref

Maybe the climate was different then, I got tired of people actually trying to link intelligence to their musical preferences. I also had to put up with people completely disregarding other genres. A lot of the fans claimed to be open minded but were actually quite rigid, disregarding things for being too simple, poppy, "emo" and various other things.
I still like plenty of the classic prog acts, I'm just talking about a lot of the fans I had to deal with.

Don't think its right to link intelligence to preference but there is an element of your breadth of experience. I mean if all you have ever heard are nice catchy songs with 3 riffs or you limit yourself to 20th century classical music through snobbery then you are missing out on a lot of good stuff.
Yes it's wrong to disregard other genres out of hand but you can reach a point where you have heard enough to know that it doesn't appeal to you and then you disregard it in future mainly because you only have limited time to listen to new music.

So, I don't even know this band and I don't even listen to pop punk. I just swept in to reply to a comment. I guess in a way that makes me just as bad. I just think being closed minded can go for both sides and is a trait a lot of people need to grow out of.
Let's get back on topic then, carry on.

Well, basically I believe that prog fans are generally open minded about other genres and it seems that you don't think so.
|
| |
The ones on this site wouldn't imply that, like KILL (no offense) and his followers.
|
| |
damn it's back
|
| |
Someone like KILL is quite forthright sometimes but he actually has a very wide range of tastes from what I've seen. It's just that I totally disagree that prog fans in general are any more closed minded than anyone else.
|
| |
KILL really wasn't the best example, since he does like a variety of good stuff. They're still rather obnoxious about it and many seem to have their heads up their asses, which is why this dicussion came up in the first place.
The communities I hung around in the past most likely made me bitter.

surely some kid going beyond pop and what gets dished out to them in the media that goes off and listens to something like Zappa or Soft Machine would actually imply having an open mind ?
|
| |

|
