"Hammett rules"
Hammett is overrated in my opinion, but what's good about him, is that he seems to be a humble, down to earth person.

One of the first Metallica albums I've bought. Still rules.

Great review as always ;)
Never really got into songs like Enter Sandman, Holier Than Thou, and Nothing Else Matters.
But its songs like Of Wolf and Man, The Unforgiven, and The God That Failed that make this album a pleasant and enjoyable listen.

Cool story Hans bro =] My teenager (13 yo) who is a huge Metallica fan would greatly appreciate the reading of this. Pos'd.

Can't knock this review. Great recollection of your past, Big Hans. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

Great nostalgic review, solo in The God That Failed is excellent.
I was 16 when it was released and even though my butt still hurts from the disappointment in the change of direction, I still enjoy this album.

Great review, Big Hans.
My "Big Hans - Black Album" moment was listening to RTL (vinyl!) emanating from the speakers with my jaw dropping in disbelief as the gates of HELL groaned wide open.
The then "wall of sound" that came out of the speakers is something that I'll still remember when I'm an "Alzheimered" drooling 90 y.o. in diapers... ;)

Great review Hans, I feel pretty much the same about this album. Used to listen to fucking MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice, before hearing Sad But True on MTV aged 13. Spent the next day at school pestering anyone that I thought might have a copy (on cassette) of this album to borrow, before listening to it non stop for days.
My entire CD collection was just the first five Metallica albums for about the first year I had a CD player, so I can barely listen to them now.

Metallica has once again proven that they can succeed at anything. This time, the radical shift in sound is due to an unlikely collaboration with legendary songwriter Lou Reed. Lulu chronicles the harsh realities of prostitution and the effect it has on the whore as well as those she encounters. Spanning the length of two discs, Lulu sees the relative aspects of love and morality pondered amidst a backdrop of heavy-hitting riffs. Topics including vulnerability and heartbreak are juxtaposed with harrowing depictions of violence and ugliness resulting in a profusely emotional listening experience.rMetallica provides not only their trademark metallic flourishes, but also experiments with more atmospheric compositions (as can be heard on "Cheat On Me"); adding new layers of depth to their already impressive repertoire. Reed pulls his weight by delivering the lines of his poetry with a unique conviction seldom heard in modern music. Never one to shy away from controversy, Reed also shines with his many thought provoking metaphors such as when he equates the force of a flesh-penetrating blade to that of a colored man's dick. Together, these two artists have combined to create a challenging recording which will no doubt be making an appearance on many year-end lists.
