I think they could've made a killing on the festival circuit by appealing to the old timers, while still building a core fanbase among the "You say Kanye I say Deep Purple" kids and scene girls just by being goodlooking dudes with actual talent the way GVF is doing now. But alas, we'll never know.

And RE: BFMV, I don't think that's true. Looking at their wiki page I'd say the band's popularity hasn't dropped off all that much despite them not being in the mainstream any more. Temper Temper sold just as well as Scream Aim Fire in the US and Venom actually charted higher.

Jammed this hard back in high school. There's some great guitarwork found here if you're willing to overlook some clearly poor lyrical choices. Ashes, Honest Eyes, and That Fire go hard.
