Would it help if I said that those weird backup vocals in "Move On" is the chorus to "All the Young Dudes" played backwards? Or that Fantastic Voyage is about the fear of nuclear fallout?
Have you seen the music video for "Boys Keep Swinging"? It's probably one of Bowie's best videos (especially for his pre-80s videos)

"being sandwiched between two arguably superior albums (Heroes and Scary Monsters)" - oh, please, let's argue about it! I find this album superior to both of those, it has nary a single hit but it's just universally and homogeneously good. The only Bowie album that doesn't have a shitty song tucked onto it for no apparent reason.
