and Kubrick if it's just a disagreement on the bounds of a genre then we can't really agree dude

I think the bands I listed are WAAAY too diverse to fall under one genre. Yeah sure you can point out specifics in their sounds but if I asked for someone to rec me a djent band as I really liked, say, Meshuggah, and someone rec'd me Periphery, I would probably not get what I was expecting and in fact i've seen that sort of thing happen on this site. it's not a travesty or anything it's just an unnecessary jump from yeah they have one or two things in common to subgenre

Yeah.. that's definitely true (in reference to what you said about getting rec'd Periphery based on Meshuggah). I think that can happen with any genre though honestly... just because bands share some similar characteristics, by no means are they always going to appeal to the same crowd. I think we just disagree on how many similar characteristics have to be shared in order to say two band are in the same genre you know? That's not a big deal.. just personal opinion. I definitely can see your point of view and I think it's perfectly valid (as all opinions are). The only thing I don't see as opinion is what genres are and what they should be used for.. but I think we are in agreement on that anyway.

BTW, nice touch with "if I asked for someone to rec me a djent band as I really liked, say, Meshuggah." I'm an avid enthusiast of irony :D

look the world of progressive metal has more overlaps than there are chinese citizens. its a clusterfuck

i mean you have prog metal
you have mathcore
post metal
progressive black metal
post black metal
experimental metal
avant-garde metal
etc

i dont think adding djent to the mix really serves any purpose. but yeah, personal opinion etc.

I'm an avid enthusiast of irony :D

haha honestly I couldn't think of a "djent" band i liked more. djent must really suck...

Yeah I mean that's what my basic argument is essentially. When people say the word "djent" there is an automatic association with a particular sound of music. That in itself is what makes its a "genre" whether it deserves to be one or not you know?

still don't agree at all with this. it brings to mind a particular sound but not necessarily a sound of music if that makes sense

its like calling REM and The Smiths etc "jangle" bands. you see porch immediately disagreed with me when he thought i was being serious so I don't think it's fair to attribute backlash against djent as "elitist" prejudice against music that sucks

I don't get it, why don't people just call these 'djent' bands prog? That genre tag fits perfectly because it's such an ambiguous term anyways.
