But there is merit in taking more abstract ideas and making them more accessible without losing quality. An album like this is the perfect blend of experimentation and catchiness to me and that isnt easy to pull off. Yea the krautrock stuff that inspired him is amazing, but it wasnt exactly made to be anything more than a niche genre.

definitely a valid point that he repackages stuff to a wider audience but he does it in a respectful way for me. never too derivative or straight plagiarism. it's also extremely impressive he managed to nail so many different styles within that decade.

dude I listen to can's ege bamyasi for pleasure way more than any bowie. It ain't no niche. That stuff is genuinely great rock and roll. It was just german, so it didn't get heard. And yeah chris. Some of the songwriting on heroes is A+

I mean you can say Hip Hop was nothing but repackaging/sampling jazz, soul, and whatever other songs to make em

more accessible to the mainstream. That is exactly what they did but you cant say A Tribe Called Quest is bad (you better

not!). Bowie is kind of the same way to me.

Derho niche means it wasnt meant to dominate the top charts. Doesnt mean it wasnt good. Can was one of the best band ever but I get completely different things out of them and Bowie.

he's a shapeshifter in some ways but that doesn't mean he copies people or is ripping anybody off. he was still ridiculously innovative and had a massive influence on music even if he wasn't the 'first' to do something. and yeah playing a post-genre before the genre exists is pretty awesome

also cool yankee post punk is one of my fav genres too and it's not that big on sput. i'm always willing to give and receive recs

yeah man I know what you mean. Don't think it's quite as much of a deconstruction/reconstruction as hip-hop, but I do know what you mean. Just wouldn't 5 anything by Bowie, but that's just me personally

idk sput isn't always too good with old stuff that aren't widespread classics or metal. do you listen to any new wave? that's one of my very favorite genres and it doesn't even have a damn tag on sput.

it's kinda like krautrock I think in that a couple bands get the most enormous amount of hype (neu/can), others sort of get talked about, and then like dozens of gems are just totally forgotten

Im not as big on New Wave as Post-Punk. Most of it is a little too poppy/synthy I guess. But I like Talking Heads, 70s Elvis Costello, Devo, The Police, The Feelies, That one Cars album, That one B-52s album, New Order, XTC, The The (best band name of all timez), Japan, Gary Numan, and a few others off the top of my head.

most new wave I like is from that awk time when post-punk/punk bands were popping themselves up, but hey I still get off on the human league. Also new order of course

yeah it's basically like post punk but cheesier, especially in the later years. but i really love that. i'm a sucker for extremely 80's synths and hooks. but it's definitely a genre that's dominated by a few huge bands with a plethora of gems to find. new order is fucking amazing tho so i can understand that

Yea but derho Post-Punk is/was a MUCH more popular genre than Krautrock. Im just saying if somebody is into the indie rock of today they should easily like Post-Punk. Post-Punk might generally be a little darker and more experimental but the catchiness and bass lines are there for ya.
