It's a concept album in a looser sense...but most of the songs revolve around hull's near-divorce.

not sure what to rate this. which is an issue considering i'm supposed to be reviewing it. i'd rank it equal to metn i think. it's a lot bigger and braver, but it's also also a lot less fun.

Yeah I think it's probably the least fun album I've ever heard with the exception of the title-track but its effect is pretty goddamn profound.

i know you're not a big fan of april fool, adam, but i think its playfulness saves the record quite a bit. some of those riffs and woah oh's, goodness me.

Minus the Flair, you need to give this a 5 go so you can make the summary of your review "This is it".

You might well be right Matt, it wouldn't be the first time that a sub-par track (in the context of a record) made an album a hell of a lot more complete.
As for the concept, I'm assuming that the Simple Math video has some literal meaning to it, since the first song is called 'Deer' and in 'Leave It Alone' he says about it kicking out at him. Of course, it could not be a deer, it could be the baby he mentions the loss of in 'Apprehension', though that would fuck up the timeline considerably. I'm still delving into the subject matter really.

I think Pensacola is a really fun sing-along track.

i'm a little sketchy on the concept. i've seen a few interviews where hull says its about his relationship with his wife and god, but am i wrong in thinking the main cause of tension in that relationship is his wife being an atheist? just a few lines make me think so - specifically the one in which he references her directly. "amy, you must be tired, cos when you sleep you sleep alone. and understand the throne, cos if he didn't pay what he had paid i'd undeniably become erased." a lot of the rest of the record makes sense if you piece it together like that, but that idea hinges on amy's beliefs.
most of the time i'm confused whether he's talking about his wife, god, or something else entirely. but i guess when your wife is going to read a line like "goddamn i'm tired of lying, i wish i loved you like i used to", you can be forgiven for being a little ambiguous elsewhere.

Fun as fuck.

The gang chant part is fun for me. And a song can be fun to sing along to regardless of its lyrical content. Coheed & Cambria songs come to mind.

Yeah I got that impression too Matt glad to know I'm not the only one. I know Hull has stated he's not a strict "Christian" but that he does see himself as religious and spiritual etc. etc. so he battles with his faith all the time and tries to understand it better as he goes.
His wife apparently gave the green light for him to write about it so ^^
As far as I can tell, it's clear that:
- It's about him nearly getting divorce from his wife
- It's a three-way conversation between him, his wife and god
- It's got SOMETHING to do with death (either the deer or the abortion (more likely) or both)
- ?
