Phlebas, I think it's Robert Christgau you're arguing with here...Dean of American Rock Critics...

I like this. You might not. But I do. Just my opinion. Don't worry, yours is valid too!

I am not the king of understanding BTBAM, but you are clearly missing the structure in their music. This music isn't for the faint of heart. They are definitely going after people who like complex, technical music. And to this aim, they achieved another brilliant and complex output.

BTW I do like the style of your writing, and think you have a gift for words. Keep the reviews coming, but if you review something so negatively from a very popular band, definitely be ready for some argument.

You should get prepared yourself. All you're really doing is trying to convince him that your opinion is right and his is wrong, not that he interpreted it "wrong" but that he interpreted the album differently than you

I've been listening to punk, hardcore, grind, noise and thrash metal for about twenty years. Think my heart can take it. I love complex, technical music - my personal taste just does not gel with this particular release.

BTW I do like the style of your writing, and think you have a gift for words. Keep the reviews coming, but if you review something so negatively from a very popular band, definitely be ready for some argument.

I've reviewed five or six (I think) popular albums on here, with negative scores. Most people, even fans of the artists, take it in their stride and have a chat about it. You're the first person who has ever, in my whole life, tried to prove my opinion wrong.

To say that the riffs are glued together without development is laughable.

Remember when you inferred I was a bully because of the club-fisted oaf comment? Well your passive-aggressivity is pretty close to the bone. I'm a sensitive guy, y'know. I'll read your review, and think about your views on the structure of the material here - hell, it might even change my mind. Either way, I'll never choose to experience music through theory, because I just like goin with my gut reaction, tempered with a little thought.

I shouldn't have gone to bed last night. This thread was fricking gold.

Philalethes, I put it to you that music - very broadly - has two objectives. The first is to convey an artistic idea; the second is to entertain. If all your music theory analysis is true and correct (and I'm sure it is), BTBAM have definitely achieved the first objective.

What you fail to understand is that some people will believe that BTBAM didn't manage the second. This makes a rating such as 1.5 or 2.0 perfectly valid. Even if BTBAM's instrumentation is like nothing else the world has ever seen before, if it can't connect to its target audience...then what's the use?

I am also extremely uncomfortable with your idea of there being a "universally true" rating for every single piece of music ever created.

this is a very well written review. best so far. the other reviews have been way too fan-boyish for me. though this is my favorite band of all time and i completely disagree with this. nice.
