The album seems a bit misguided. After countless plays, I still can't help but to be drawn to the low points of this album- the self-promoting shout out and jon mess' random filled rants in particular. It's really hit or miss with mess, and the ratio is about half imo. Some songs he can really add to (see: Heat Seeking Ghost of Sex, Spooks) but others, his frantic mannerisms drop value to. Instrumentally, this album shines (as one would expect) and captivates that favorable mix of ph/funk. Maybe over time this could grow, but a 4 is the most I'd go for now.

People talk shit about Mess' surreal lyrics and unique delivery but seem to forget that his voice is just terrible.
I completely disagree. I think Mess's voice has a really distinct, sarcastic tone.
Both his and Craig's lyrics are abhorrent even if you're making allowances for audience.
Craig's lyrics are extremely half-assed, Mess' are extremely silly. I think you're missing the point.
The callout shit at the beginning of 'Thug City' is exactly what almost ruined Fake History for me.
I think you're taking this album a bit too seriously.

"So skram and branded, the pylon is silver ion."
I mean come on, referencing cmhwak jokes and Starcraft in one line? Freaking greatness.

I am definitely taking it too seriously. Just don't have the patience for the vocal wankery anymore. It's a shame because the musicianship gets the short end of the stick. Just makes me wonder what they'd sound like with a "serious" vocalist.

i think the call out part at the beginning of Thug City is funny. who gives a shit that they do that.
If that ruins the album for you than your taking this band WAY to seriously

this band doesnt take this band seriously. so yeah.
Need Money is gonna be a great live song though.
Also Jonny actually got it together for long enough to write ONE decent hook (Privilously Poncheezied) so I guess it's not a COMPLETE fail.

-One of the best moments w/ craig for this album was when he sings on privilously poncheezied "i hateee to say no because of those beautiful blue eyes/i hateee to say nooo when it comes to those beautiful fuckin eyes" haha
-as for the lyrics the cleans are half-assed but well delivered imo (calm, laid back, not being obnoxious like on most of DTBM or Emarosa) and Mess is a boss i really dont like justifying his work because you either enjoy it or you dont...its hit or miss i guess cept Mess don't miss...even tho he's a horrible shot (see what i did there lolol)
-instrumentation is the best out of their discog...its dtbm meets happiness
-the self indulgent shout outs and raps are exactly that...self-indulgent they do it for fun and for themselves..i enjoy it...i also extremely liked them on Fake History.

yeah zombiMessiah the only way you'll begin to enjoy DGD is to bear through Mess's parts till the rest of the album starts to become so infectious that you can deal with it. I personally dig Mess's style and lyrics but when i first listened to downtown battle mountain 1 back in the day i hated Mess's parts. I thought they were awful... but as i began to enjoy all the other parts more it became a bearable and meaningful part of the music.
