Just listening to this for the first time, and it's really nice. I'm very pleasantly surprised, as I'm not a huge fan of Animal Collective and was wary of this record due to the comparisons. The vocals are beautiful and the sonic landscape is incredibly soothing and textured.

Reminding of Bjork & Animal Collective, young Montreal based avant-pop quartet Braids show a lot of promise on their self-produced debut LP 'Native Speaker'. Containing loops & layers galore, the sprawling soundscapes here are hardly accessible, yet rather beguiling. The multi-dimensional vocal performance from Raphaelle Standell-Preston is definitely one reason for that, as she segues from shy to hostile in a heartbeat. With its 7 tracks lasting 44 minutes, some focus is lost along the way, but the ambition & potential evident here almost makes you overlook such flaws. Recommended Tracks: Lemonade, Glass Deers & Plath Heart.
