love portal, but impetuous ritual's album appealed more to me than any of portal's. barely. ultimately, portal wins due to their innovation in the genre, and because they have three great albums with a few good splits and demos to impetuous' one album. mito is great too, but lose to both, though they play somewhat different styles of oppressive dm.
most of the wave of east coast Australian death metal bands are better than portal: Ignivimous, Impetuous Ritual, Aethyrvorous, The Dead
ignivomous and the dead aren't really that comparable to portal, and aethyrvorous didn't have enough under their belt to compete, though they were on the right track. portal have an originality that a lot of bands lack.

Portal is alot more chaotic while IR has a stronger song structure. This and parasignosis are tied for me but Portal is aways on top.

yeah chaotic does not mean Portal has less structure, there is definitely more structure but it's very loose and unpredictable (which is arguably 'more' structured)
imp ritual are essentially incantation if incantation had two different songs playing at once

yeah unpredictable is the right way to describe portals style. since seepia i think they have been employing slightly less riffs but in more interesting ways. shows the brutal school of thought (deeds, etc) that sometimes 10k riffs per song isnt the only way to go about that feel.

portal is a monster of epic proportions that will not and cannot be trifled with. that being said I'm stoked as all hell to listen to this
