@chambered
and Tera Melos is, at heart, a technically complex band. i doubt this will ever change. they will
change their peripheries, but the accessible complexity is a longtime trademark of the band, a great
one at that. it's what separates them from everyone else. this is where much of the appreciation
for the band comes from. were they to do what you suggested--become simpler but keep the jazz--you
could expect a majority of their former fanbase to turn their backs on the band, saying phrases such
as "dumbed down", "sold out", etc.
plus Patagonian Rats is probably the biggest leap in style they've ever made as a band anyway.

stop making Tera Melos out to be more than they are-- a simplified pop version of bands that make more complex music much better than Tera Melos does

no need for hostility. what did i say that's inaccurate?
and that sentence
"a simplified pop version of bands that make more complex music much better than Tera Melos does"
is fucked up. if that means what i think it does, well . . . i never really talked about other pop
bands, nor did i compare Tera Melos to any band in particular. i just said the framework behind
Patagonian Rats is pop, not jazz.
whether they're better or worse than other bands is completely subjective, so there's
really nothing i can say about that, as it would be only my opinion, one which wouldn't have any
place here, no substance or relevance either--since that's just a mere matter of taste.

"the mathy stuff is mostly pointless noodling ala dream theater"
I disagree so hard with this. But I guess maybe that's where the main difference of opinion lies.
"i see what you are saying and yeah at times this is fun and engaging. but my point is that the 2nd half of trident tail, while being the best part of the album imo also ruins the album. it ruins it because it shows what this could have been and in comparison makes the mass amounts of math surrounding it seem completely pointless like they didn't want to go the route of trident tail so they just made everything math-y for the sake of being math-y. either they ran out of interesting ideas or they didn't want to ditch their math"
I get why you like the end of Trident so much, it's pretty damn awesome. But do you really think an album full of that would be more interesting than this? I think one of the main reasons it's so cool is because of the juxtaposition from the rest of the album. I would have liked to see more jazz spread throughout the rest of the album, but I definitely don't think Trident Trail's second half is the best part of the album.
And when you say they just made everything math-y for the sake of being math-y, couldn't you argue that them being jazzy is just for the sake of being jazzy? I would even argue that that would be more true, since Tera Melos is more a math rock band. Honestly them "ditching their math" would have made absolutely no sense IMO. I do think their mixing of genres was a cool aspect of their sound on the melodies (and absolutely agree that it is unfortunate that it's somewhat absent here). But I feel like no matter what genres they use/drop for their sound, math is the one that has to stick around for this to even be a Tera Melos release.
Sorry I'm turning into mecca here (lol, I actually enjoy reading you posts mecca I'm just messing), just felt like I had a lot i needed to say.

This should probably be an edit but I'm using chrome and dont even want to see what would happen to my paragraphs. But I'm having a really hard time even thinking of what makes something pointless noodling. I definitely agree that Dream Theater is (often) pointless noodling. But if someone were to tell me that the melodies, hold your horse is, or basically any math rock album was "pointless noodling", I wouldn't really know how to argue otherwise. Maybe I'm just bad at putting it into words.

All I know/care about is that this album flows extremely well, I love the way it sounds, and Tera Melos makes the best music videos ever.

@chambered- that's fine, but it's not really something you can expect from Tera Melos IMO.

and i highly doubt it would go over very well with the majority of their fans. certainly wouldn't
have with me. were the whole album like the last half of Trident Tail or Frozen Zoo, i would be one
of the people saying Tera Melos has dumbed down.

I tend to know all the lyrics off an album before I rate it a 5
lol i doubt that will happen with anyone for this album. to me, nick's difficult to understand in a lot of parts.
but i am interested to see if these lyrics make any general sense.
