Apologies FlawedPerfection, I am a newbie to your site and didn't realise that it was standard practice to have multiple reviews from staff writers. I hope you can forgive my error it's just most critic sites tend to have one review.

Still don't know what to think of this. First half is gold, but I just don't like the second half that much at all

I still haven't heard it so I really don't give a flying fuck.

I think you'll come to love the back half, similar to how Neon Bible's songs that didn't immediately grab most of us grew to become classics. We live in an immediate era where a song is dismissed after a listen or two if it's not catch-y enough. I find that all of their albums get better and I notice more and more things as I listen to them. The catchiest stuff I've heard so far this year (The Drums, Sleigh Bells, etc already bores me because it's too simplistic and familiar and I'm not discovering anything new). The best stuff I've heard this year is getting better with more listens.



Half Light II - Amazing merger of new wave with gospel elements



Suburban War - Great lyrics about growing up. Some nice observations about how we followed scenes when we were kids and ended up running with different cliques based on appearance... "The music divides us into tribes. You grew your hair so I grew mine. You cut your hair... I never saw you again."



Wasted Hours - Sort of has a Neil Young meets Roy Orbison aspect to it that I love.



Deep blue - Again, this one sounds better every time I listen to it.



Sprawl II - Regine hits this out of the park, singing with tremendous emotion and the chorus especially rings true for me since my girlfriend and I nearly purchased our first home that would have faced a big block shopping outlet where the lights would have been on all night long. Not getting that house was one of the best decisions we made!

I love how songs get exponentially better the more I listen to them; it was only after the 521st spin of My World 2.0 that it really started hitting the sweet spot for me.



I lost my mobile phone this week so it really hits home when he sings 'One day they will see it's long gone.'

I remember when OK Computer first came out and being immediately disappointed with every song aside from Karma Police because that was the only song that jumped out and reminded me on my first couple listens of Radiohead's Creep, Fake Plastic Trees, Street Spirit, etc...



I wasn't alone. I remember a lot of my friends having the exact same reaction. Until people with a bit more music savvy than most of of the people my age gave it a listen after listening to hundreds of hours of music that year and started realizing that it was special a lot of kids had pretty much dismissed it because of the changes they had made, because there weren't a ton of radio-friendly songs, and because they started showing their first glimpses of prog/art rock/electronic that they'd ultimately experiment with more and more. People older than myself though with a better ear for unique music that will stand the test of time recognized it sooner and the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. 14 years later or whatever it's been... They were right.



As I listened to that record as the year (and eventually years) wore on I started liking it more and more and the classics started piling up. I started to love the record as a whole. Laugh all you want but sometimes it does take time to appreciate something that's not immediately accessible, especially if you're going in hoping to hear the kinds of sounds you knew from before. I can't even remember the most accessible record from 1996 now that I think of it.

EnderandBean, I will try not to be an asshole for once in my life. I understand what you are saying that sometimes music will grow on you; all music fans will have had an experience of this. In this case; however, I don't think the OK Computer comparison holds water.



OK Computer is stylistically a pretty varied album, even just Paranoid Android sounded completely nuts when I first heard it on the radio back in yore. Nuts but instantly exciting.



My problem with the Suburbs is that lyrically and musically it does very little Arcade Fire have not done (arguably much better) before. Not only is a lot of it not very catchy, which I agree is not necessarily a bad thing, but large swathes of the record are in my opinion rather bland.



It lacks the 'what's going on here' factor of an album like OK computer that pushes you to keep listening and brings you back for more; it's obvious what's going on.

See, I see things differently. Some bands would start out with slower, gutiar-driven folk first and then release something that sounds a bit more epic second.



The fact that they've went from huge to intimate is the same dramatic shift people expect from a third record; it's just that they went from huge sounding to intimate instead of the other way around.



And I disagree that this sounds very much like anything they've done before. Sure, it all sounds like Arcade Fire because of the instrumentation and the voices but they've never sounded this assured, focused and confident before.



In the past they felt wild and chaotic; I know people love that about them but I like the change here too. There's a confidence and a swagger to these stripped down songs that I never thought I'd hear from them.

Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I just don't see this as a dramatic shift from Neon Bible. In terms of production style, and as you say instumentation, I think you could mix and match songs between both albums without any sounding out of place.



I just happen to think most of the best songs would be from Neon Bible.



It's hardly Dylan goes electric! It's guitar based indie rock with strings, but time will be the judge. Seems to me people are too eager to say I love you before they get to know each other.
