i guess it's probably because i'm a Christian, but i adore the lyrics.

lyrics are bad, Christian music bothers me.
I love the band's sound here, but they don't nearly reach their full potential anywhere nor do they create any standout, memorable tracks. I Am Undone is much better, but this is still good, definitely saves itself from a 2-2.5 by the last few tracks

the lyrics are outstanding. even from a non-religious standpoint if you're just looking at how the lyrics are written, they're great. they just have religious overtones and are straight-forward. idk how anyone would ever say they're bad, they might just not agree with what they're talking about.

fair enough I guess, to be honest I haven't listened quite enough to judge the lyrics THAT harshly, I'm just turned off by the lack of subtlety and basically everything coleba said

Basically the over-the-top image of unquestioning faith that the lyrics portray is a turnoff to a lot of pseudo-Christian and Christian listeners (myself included) who still view themselves as searching or striving for a true connection with God. It just seems insincere and unbelievable to me that they believe everything that they believe without a single doubt or even a question about the nature of God, at least that they see worthy of putting in a song.

I guess it all comes down to personal stance, but I'm a lot more open to lyrics like those found on ACB's Come Now Sleep, which while still evoking the same faith and desire for God, show a more human side that non-indoctrinated listeners can more easily and poignantly relate to.

Also, the lack of subtlety gets me too; I much prefer lyrics like those Dustin Kensrue writes, that leave room for multiple interpretations while still being as powerful.

Religious overtones is a good way to put it because the "religious" aspect is not the focus; instead it is a grateful heart to God and praising Him for making up in what we lack as humans. It is about a passionate relationship. I'm sure he has doubts all the same, but perhaps he chooses to express the ideas that will uplift the listener and encourage to search for truth themselves.

I completely understand how a non-christian would feel uncomfortable about the lyrics, faith is a touchy issue, but necessary. I, being a Christian have felt the same uneasiness when listening to the opposite spectrum of beliefs. For example- Dredg's latest deals with major doubts, not only personal, but questioning God's or Jesus' sovereignty in general. Human emotions are a funny thing.

Yeah, but as a Christian I don't feel uncomfortable when another is expressing their doubts. The only time I get uncomfortable is when someone's totally just giving a giant screw you to me - and I don't think this is a screw you to anyone, it's just a few passionate guys playing for what they believe in. Overall I don't think lyrics should have too much of an effect on the way you feel about the music, but maybe that's just me being shallow.

Lyrics sometime are the main point just being carried by means of music to present a form of entertainment or backdrop, but each band is different. Sometimes sounds and words combined can make an even more beautiful form of art that touches the soul

I totally agree. Sometimes a band's lyrics can add so much to the music (i.e. mewithoutYou etc.), but there aren't that many cases that they actually take away from the music, unless they're just unbearably stupid/bad.

Lyrics are almost always the first thing that I look for in deciding if I like the music or not (other than sounding like total trash of course.) That's why most of my favorite bands have emerged from this "scene," i.e. Thrice, mewithoutYou, etc. I am a Christian and My Epic's lyrics not only inspire me but also encourage and drive me to become deeper in my faith. I fully believe that these guys are genuine in everything they write about in their lyrics and that only makes me want to reach that level of understanding and maturity in my life.

Lyrics such as As Cities Burn and mewithoutYou, which focus more on the doubt and struggle of faith, resound just as much in helping deal with adversity as My Epic's lyrics do in inspiring to be more like Christ, and helping others as well.

For Christians, the two lyrical styles should really go hand in hand. That's how I see it anyway.

Exactly. Actually just pulled out a dusty mWY CD and realized how great they are. Brother, Sister to be exact. His lyrics are much more creative than My Epic's, IMO

I agree that the lyrics on this CD are a bit too...blunt for my tastes sometimes, but they are still great and poetic. Trust me these guys doubt. When I saw them live Aaron explained the meaning of Lashes for a good ten minutes. It's so much better having heard Aaron himself explain the song.

Yea, I'm clearly biased due to my stance on religion. That said, "Sound and Fury" rocks my socks.

So, does stuff like APC's "Judith" bother you guys? (Of course even Maynard has been playing around with themes of faith; see 10,000 Days). Guess I've never thought about it from the opposite perspective (Gosh, now I sound all Christian).

trust me dude, they believe everything they say. but of course as human beings they're going to have doubts. i've met them, hung out with them, got to know them, etc. they're some of the most inspiring people i've ever spent time with because they have such strong beliefs and literally just spend their lives trying to make others better. they live in a group home in a bad area with a bunch of homeless people they took in and helped feed, clothe, and get back out to restart their lives. they took in a homeless guy on tour and cleaned him up and now he's their permanent roadie. like idk, they're just incredible people.

Honestly, I tend to be bothered by both the unrelenting atheist, and christian lyrics. Because both are going for something with such gusto that you wonder if they're just trying to convince themselves. That being said, album's pretty darn good.

I wouldn't say these lyrics are the ZOMG IMMA CONVERT YOU kind of lyrics, but more personal worship. I could see how some of the more over the top lyrics here could throw some people off though.

"and literally just spend their lives trying to make others better"

No trust me, I don't doubt for a second that they're awesome people, I'm just saying that if they're trying at all to reach out to nonchristians or people becoming christians through their music, they're going about it the wrong way; putting up the image of infalliable faith makes it seem like an unattainable goal for people who still have doubts or are searching. It's no fault of theirs, it's just the way they choose to express their (obviously very potent) beliefs.

Also, I realize that that previous statement came off as an attack on the band; I don't doubt they're sincere, what I meant was that to a listener with doubts it sounds impossible to BE that sincere, which can be offputting.

Also, as a side note, props to them for everything that they do. That's really impressive.

Preorder FINALLY came today haha. 3 CDs, already gave one of them away to a friend who might like them.
